I agree with you. My 1993 Camry LE Touring (top of the line) even after 18 years on the road (but only 160.K) is quieter both city and highway, than most of the brand new ones I test drove recently (Altima,Sonata, Accord, Optima, and even the 2012 Camry XLE Hybrid!). I guess I would have to move up to the ES350 to find the equivalent or better... but that is another budget. Why should the hybrids be noisy anyway?I think this is motly subjective for people that review cars... a controlled test isn't something most of these people would bother to do, but is certainly possible. I could be wrong though, I don't browse many automotive sites.
Oh, and I think the Camry's cabin is quieter from my experience.

That's why they have flashing lights in the grill.There's a limit to how quiet the interior of a car can be, otherwise you couldn't hear sirens.
