Do americans think soccer is boring?

It is fun to play, but extremely BORING to watch. Probably because you can sit there for hours and only have 1 goal scored. Americans like varying action and contact. Soccer would be more interesting to me if they had a smaller field, larger goals, and maybe 2 balls in play at the same time.

How can you say it's boring to watch? The course of a game can change in an instant!

For example, the German Irish game. With 30 seconds left to play Germany was about to advance into the second round with out having to worry about its next game but in a moment of luck Ireland scored a goal, tied the game, and forced Germany to play another game. It's nerve wracking to us fans!

Football (American Soccer) is the Official sport of the World, a la "World Cup"? I am an American Soccer player and my thought is: Who cares what other Americans think.

Of course it is true though, American soccer is pretty boring when compared to the English or Italian Football.

So is two people running a race around a pole (Like in Alice in Wonderland). Pole circling is non stop action. Pole circling takes lots of speed, endurance, agility, and strength. Unfortunately no one ever gets anywhere and most of the time neither person is in the lead. Soccer would be great if there were an average of 5-10 scores per game. But when so many end at 0 - 0, it just is non-stop running around the field with noone getting anywhere.

One thing I noticed about soccer fans is that they are mostly just fans when it relates to their home country team. That means most soccer fans I know would consider watching a soccer game a waste of time unless it involves their home country team or the result will affect their home country team

that is my perspective on it as well.As to the football vs Rugby remark let me say this: If the Rugby players tipped the scales at 325lbs, could bench press a Volvo, and still run a 4.7 second 40 yard dash then they would need pads and a helmet as well or there would be carnage on the field

Well, compared to football and basketball, I personally think soccer pales, not just from an excitement standpoint, but also in terms of strategic interest.

The main issues I have with soccer, in particular, are these:

1) The way any soccer player cries out like a banshee and flops like a landed fish the moment a player from another team even so much as touches him with a fingernail. It's just disgusting and silly.

2) Offsides... In a fast paced game like hockey, it's essential. However, in soccer it simply leads to defensive strategies where defenders are often rewarded for incompetence, and coaches actually instruct their players to run away from the goal in undermanned situations!

3) Penalty kicks to decide the outcomes of games after overtime. I actually enjoyed the USA/China women's game a great deal until that ridiculous sudden death at the end. Fact is, we'll never know who the better team was on that given day, and players from both sides were done a horrible injustice by reducing an epic contest of wills to a guessing game between goalie and shooter.

4) Refs keeping the official time on the field. Why... just why??? All they use is completely subjective judgement at the end of games to determine when it's time to go home. The potential for abuse is enormous.

Don't get me wrong... I enjoy playing soccer, and I like the game as a whole. The level of skill exhibited by the finest players is artistically beautiful to watch. But there's nothing in soccer that makes it stand out from other sports, imho.... and there's a lot that makes it seem silly.

Anybody who says that soccer isn't a rough sport is wrong. Catch the Nigeria vs. Sweeden game that was just played? A Nigerian player got a cut above his eyebrow. They took him to the side, gave him stiches ON THE FIELD, put a bandage on, and put him back in the game. He then preceeded to head the ball a bunch.

That guy is a badass.

Ice hockey is for wussies? You have not played hockey at any level! You are one of these people who will watch games and say to yourself "I could do that way better than that guy just did". Rugby is a tough sport - I agree.

I've played regular field hockey as a kid, and I've got hit by hockey balls (and a hockey stick) too a few times (those can go pretty fast, seen em break the boards of the goal). I do not like sports where they give all players huge amount of protective clothing (can understand the goal keeper getting it) to keep them from getting hurt. If you fear pain that much, go play chess in the current version. (They used not to have a board between the chessplayers under the table, which meant that shins got kicked to pieces during the game)

I don't claim to be able to do better than those playing, I just don't like the sport itself. You may be world champion in picking your nose, but I won't claim I can do it better just cause I don't like nosepicking.

I've practiced Katare and other martial arts, I do know my limits.

Also, the comparison between field hockey and ice hockey made by someone else is assinine. There are no Rob Blakes, Chris Prongers, Derian Hatchers coming at you in field hockey. It is a completely different sport. I don't care what you've been hit with playing field hockey, try taking a 90mph slapshot in the throat like a Canadiens player did a few years back by blocking a shot. (his name escapes memory) Chris Pronger was hit in the chest with a Dmitri Mironov slapshot(anyone who knows hockey knows how hard he could shoot) and dropped like a ton of bricks, had some heart problems right on the ice. It is not a hurt-free sport saved by some pads. The pads don't stop you from getting hurt, they try to prevent serious injury.

A person at our club died from a hockey ball passing _through_ his belly.

Soccer and football are both great sports IMO. It always cracks me up when Americans and Europeans bicker over which is "better" or "more exciting." I've found that whenever someone from either culture takes the time to learn the rules of the other side's sport, start following a few players, pick a team to root for, etc. they almost inevitably realize that it is also a good game and no more "boring" than their own. Oddly enough, there's a reason why both sports have millions of fans.

Hmm soccer...reminiscing childhood's memory...I played soccer almost everyday after school, barefooted of course and sometimes on basketball court (those cement court would scrape skins off your bare foot :Q).

Not much of TV sport watcher, I only watch the championship games in basketball, football, and soccer. But I love to play basketball and soccer though.

A few minutes ago England just scored on Argentina thru a penalty kick. God saves the Queen!
