Do all fan grills increase the noise level?

It could be the fan or the grill.

Try removing the grill and see if the sound is still there. If not, then it is your fan.

Generally, it is not prudent to have those type of grills over the fans.

Practicality over style

Grills block airflow, and this can cause turbulence noise and laminar flow noise too. In general, the more restrictive the grill, the louder it will be. The best grills would be wire grills that obstruct the least. I think in this case it is may be your grill that is making the noise, but turbulence and laminar noise should be more of a "whoosh" sound than a whine. Make sure the grill is firmly attached and not vibrating and making noise.

depends on fan speed too. i don't like fan grills like that, block too much surface area. things could be loose too.

Yeah, the fan grill is the cause of the noise and it is blocking way more area then I'd like it to. I think I'll look for a different grill.

I really don't want to use one of those old style wire grills because they look so damn ugly.

I'm thinking this one will do the trick:

Depends on the fan grill. If you consider the fan grills that is just a piece of metal with HOLES drilled\stamped into it, then yes, that could possibly do it. Why? Simple acoustics, its fast moving air past a small hole which can create a simple whiny sound (not a whistle). For some fan grills, a whooshing sound can occur caused by turbulance, depending on the geometry of the grill.

I use the grill most commonly refered to as finger guards. This is NOT intended to work as a filter, but it helps prevent my fingers from going in, and mostly, wires.

I have air filters in my intake, so yes, I do get increased noise. But you know what, It decreases the accumulation of dust in my case.

That dragon grill will create turbulance and whining. The turbulance will be because of the odd geometry of the grill. The whining comes from the sharp points of the grill. Also, the grill may be vibrating.
