Do all colleges have the "Academic" versions of software?

Sluggo

Lifer
I need to take some classes for work, and wondered if I should check out the school book store for software before signing up. 🙂

if they don't have it they should be able to get it for you. There are places online that'll sell to you @ academic prices w/ a school id or proof that you're a student.

u know what is cool is UT austin here has a deal with MS where you can get lots of the popular MS software for $5 a cd. for instance, i got office XP pro for $5 x 3 cds. AND....the it is an OEM copy so no need to activate. 😉 the thing goes for like $380 in bestbuy (i believe)

now if only they would release win XP. cant wait to spend my hard earned $5 or $10 cash on that baby....

😀

Liche
turn on your PM.
is there a way that you can buy a copy for a fellow student from the University of California? 🙂

Rakkis...they only let us get one copy. that is the one limitation of the deal. so far, ive bought w2k, ME, office 2000, and office XP. that leaves 98, SE and some visual studio 6 and various other stuff.

http://www.campuscomputer.com/ goto MS cds...that is the list of academic software they have.

btw, i just remembered about this site for academic software for sluggo.
http://www.journeyed.com/

the prob is, u have to be a student and show them proof. otherwise, you cant buy anything.

lichee would you be willing to buy a copy of office xp and winxp and ship one to a student at the Univ of Delaware when it comes out you will be rewarded 🙂

lol. i charge an arm and a leg. 😉

but really though...i can only get one copy. ive already bought office XP.

I would definitely check it out. While most schools aren't as cheap as UT, most (if not all) give big discounts on software.

My school stinks when it comes to software prices. Almost all the software they sell can be found cheaper on pricewatch.
I'm usually better off buying from academic software web sites.

A little off topic but i just love the words on the campuscomputer site:

<<Windows Me makes your computer operate more efficiently, while giving you the latest tools that let you store and organize digital content. >> LOL

Ok anyways back on track, here at UCLA u don't get software for $5, but you do get it for say $50~100 less than any other stores out there. Also as an EE major in my first day of CS class they gave us MS Visual Studio Proffesional Edition for free, MS's way to hook us while we're young, I bit. 🙂

wow...free....that thing is like 5 discs so it would cost me $25+tax. i dont even think it is the same version as what they give u.

anyways, yeah that campusstore does word there stuff to boost sales. even though it might not even be true. good catch Bruin 😉

btw "somethingwitty"....i did provide a link to a software store that sells academic software at decent prices. if that doesnt work, have you tried your local campus bookstore? i know over here, we have a store that sells software. although, i dont think it is really cheaper than BB or someother B&M store. but atleast they try.

The visual studio was a fully functional version...came with box and everythign still shrink-wrapped (i forgot whether it was profession or enterprise edition). I know some of my friends returned them to fry's for store credit or they sold it on ebay for major $$$. (I chose to keep mine just because I feel bad about selling something that i got for free =P) It's also just limited to CS/EE majors and they had them in store at one of the UGrad offices where you had to put ur name and stuff signifying you received it. 🙂

yeah, i noticed that a bit late. oops 😱

AFAIK, my campus bookstore does not offer software at that great of a price-certainly not at $5. I'm hoping they change that soon.

BruinEd03: It was the professional version, (well at least it was this year). And I heard that they were checking ebay and such this year to make sure that no one sold it like that, but I can see the teachers just saying that. Also wasn't it an impressive box? When I first heard I was getting a copy of visual studio, I expected like a 1 or 2 cd set, this was a behemoth of a box and many cds.

Yeah...i got the box fall of '99 and I guess my class was the one that started egaying it. I left my cd's in my cd wallet when i moved out frosh year though so i don't have the "exact" cd's anymore. I copied it from my friend which is legal since I already own a license of it. 🙁

I also expected a rinky dinky two cd's in a sleeve thing and when i saw the box the first thought that came into my mind was "HOLY MUTHAFU*KA THIS THING IS HUGE!!". 😀

wow...that is really cool. we just get a cd in a free cd sleeve. 🙁

but the entire box shrink wrapped....very cool
