But to the above point physical labor is typically stress-free, whereas when you're affecting changes to a business process that, if done improperly could impact the business immediately and substantially, the stress is much higher.

This.

Last summer, we had a big patio installed at our home in 90+ degree heat. It was hard, tedious work, but once the shift was over, those workers were able to drop their tools and go home without worrying about work until the next day.

Contrast that to my job. I may not get hot and sweaty, but my systems are used by tens of thousands of people and have very high visibility, as they affect events witnessed by tens of millions more people. When I have to perform updates or implement new features, it is extremely stressful and even if I leave the office on time, I'm worrying about those things all the time. If something goes wrong, I work until it is fixed regardless of hours and time of day (just a couple weeks ago, I worked 9 PM to 5 AM on one issue after having worked all day and then had to get up and work again).

I had the joy of both experiences. I had to compute the layout of structures costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, fix mistakes on plans(that the high dollar engineers and architects made), then get out of the truck, slop through the mud, and swing a hammer to mark it in the field. There's nothing like laying in bed at midnight, and suddenly thinking "oh, fuck! What exactly did I do today!!" :^/

No, all plumbing since 2000 self installs...On a serious note as the younger generation was educated for jobs in IT and management the older generation of plumbers, carpenters, welders, pipe fitters ect. are now reaching retiring age and there are fewer tradespeople to take their place, soon these jobs will pay big$$ as nobody is coming out of trade schools to replace those leaving..

yeah As a nation we went form everyone doing jobs they are good at and want. to everyone having to go to college and work in office. if you wan't to do anything less you are a failure.

its insane. there is nothing wrong with those jobs. we need them. they pay well.

not everyone has the mentality (note that i am not saying IQ) to sit in a office and push paper all day. some need to work with there hands and do something.

its sad that kids are not going to trade schools. there is nothing wrong with that.

My parents own a dairy farm and think they work harder than every one else no matter what. Granted most of the time they are probably right but they no concept of what other people do.

The capitalists love to watch the little people fight amongst themselves. Divided, we work cheaper.

I know people with dairy farms. Your parents are right. :p

For both, blue collar, and white collar, there's a huge range in the degree to which they work, and a huge range in the degree of stress that they might feel. It's the lazy people in both types of fields that often serve as examples making the whole field look bad.

Both jobs can suck but success in the white collar world generally makes things MUCH easier for a person than success in the blue collar world. Failure in either can create cravings in anyone for being on the other side of the fence.

I'm stuck in part of both, the psychical aspect of my job requires driving 2 different kinds of forklifts, moving around 55 gal drums and I'm also in charge of database maintenance and cycle counting for my dept because no one else can understand SAP (or want's to learn for that matter). I guess it's job security to an extent but it grinds on me, I get really aggravated when someone from the front office comes down, "didn't you see my email"?, hey fuckwad ,I haven't mastered the art of driving a forklift and simultaneously reading email!...

Interesting. I wouldn't mind being able to leave my desk and go move things on the loading docks with a forklift. I haven't done that in about fifteen years.

This is how capitalism is supposed to work :) (lawyers are making less than plumbers because plumbing is a pain in the ass)

I've done both and way more white collar workers think blue collar workers are dumb laborers than the other way around. It takes a person with unique qualities to be a cube rat. I could get offered big bucks to work in a cube farm and I'd have to turn it down because I know I can't do that kind of job for long without going postal.
