do AIM and IRC require port forwarding or other settings?

If you're using a UNIX/Linux machine as a firewall/router, make sure that A) clients can establish connections, B) established outgoing connections can find their way back to the client.

Also, make sure that your client machine has the firewall's internal IP address selected as its gateway.

probably not but it doesn't hurt, try some other servers.. fix your local host/ip settings

If you are using a router, visit the forums on dslreports.com, they have all kinds of support there. MIRC should work, but, DCC Sends have problems with some NetGear routers (there may or may not be workarounds). Connectivity works and receives are OK.

AIM worked fine with default configs on my router.

as far as i can tell, all ICS and firewall capabilities are working well (Linksys 1 port cable/dsl router). I have no probs with ICQ or web browsing, and i haven't changed any tcp/ip settings for at least a year now

only thing i did was essentially flash and reset the router itself :(

ANY and ALL irc servers are dead even before connecting, i get that unable to connect on all servernames, even fake ones

AIM self configuration scan couldn't find any servers that could connect...argh
