Do a P4 1.6 not OC need chassis fans?

I bought a P4 1.6 Ghz system without any intake or outake chassis fan. I was told since I wont be over clocking i dont need any chassis fans. It had Intel approved CPU fan.

Monitor your temps. I would recommend some quiet panaflos at a bare minimum.

Ya, monitor your temps but with a decent HSF, the fan in your power supply might be enough to do the trick...

Personally, I would suggest running at least one intake fan...but it is possible to run without one...especially if you do not OC. I have my 1.6A @ 2.56ghz and it ran fine with no case fans, but I also have a larger case with lots of ventilation. I've since added one Panaflo intake just because the warmer days are just around the corner. 🙂

Not EXACTLY apples to apples but close: I built my dad a P4 1.8 Willemette last Christmas using an Intel board so it's not OC'ed at all. It's in an Antec SX635 case and the only case fan is the stock Antec fan exhausting behind the CPU. According to the Intel monitoring software the case temp runs around 26-30C and the CPU runs from high 20s at idle to high 30s at load (Prime95).

The 1.8 probably runs hotter than the 1.6A so I'd say it's very possible that you could get away with no case fans. If you had to put something on, put a Panaflo L1A exhausting behind the CPU, I really doubt that you'd ever hear it.

Unless your system is in a fairly hot climate, you should be fine with just a manufacturer-approved CPU fan and the standard fan in the power supply. Of course, multiple hard drives (especially SCSI ones) and multiple high-end video cards will drive up the heat.

Actually, I've done about a dozen Athlon XP 1700+ builds with only a standard AMD-approved AVC processor fan. No heat issues at all, and that chip runs warmer than yours does.

You should probably not need any case fans. I built a p4 1.6a (retail heatsink/fan) with an intel board in a fong kai 320 case with no case fans. This setup runs real cool and is silent. My power supply is antec 350w dual fan. my temps are about 26cpu idle and 24 case, load is about 33-35cpu and 32-33case.
