Do a majority of American's know anything about other religions?

This absolutely blows my mind. I read about 15 posts that made claims that were completely untrue and spouted them as if they were fact.
Surprise everyone... Muslim's believe Jesus was the son of god. OMG. Can you believe that. And guess what else, Allah = god. WHAT? REALLY? Does that mean it is the same heaven? Yeppers!

It actually disturbs me significantly. Wonder if a good deal of the problems we have with other cultures may be that we act like we know them even though a majority of us have no clue at all.

go read the OP in the other thread and go about 5-8 post down. A majority have no clue about islam at all.

I have read a bit about most of the major (and not so major) world religions, but I can't call myself an expert on any of them.

The book An Incomplete Education is a great resource for anyone desiring to have at least a surface level understanding of not only religions but also history, art, etc.

The question then becomes "Are you so closed minded that you'd make a blanket determination about 300 million people based on a few posts in ATOT?". Sounds like you have other problems. 😉

Sadly, this issue goes beyond just religion. There are far too many americans who have the same outlook on race, money, politics and any other topic that can be thought of. There's a growing trend of ignorance, indifference and selfishness in this country (actually all over the world probably) which can only lead to disaster. We have to learn that in order to survive we need to get along with one another, you would think that after a few thousand years of wars and bloodshed that the human race might have learned a thing or two.

I'm sitting near someone right now who in CONVINCED that "allah" is a different god than the christian god.

It's cute really, when he gets so bent out of shape because he cannot bring himself to believe that he came from the same place that islam did.

It's just their word that literally translates to god. "The one true god", etc.

there was a good discussion on the daily show last week with a dude that wrote a book on this very same subject. see if you can find it on youtube.

No, I can't believe that, because AFAIK it's not true.

This thread is also partially based on this book...

As a fellow American, it bothers me how people are so willing to offer up opinions while at the same time knowing nothing about things like religion that tend to really peev people (See WTC or lack there of).

Excuse me while I flaunt my ignorance but I thought Muslims considered Jesus to be a prophet, not the son of God.

Fact police: You're right, Muslims consider Jesus JAP (just another prophet) and not as significant as Mohammed; Allah's Prophet (capital P).

The way a normal Christian would view Jesus being the son of god is the same as an Islam. He was born of virgin birth, performed miracles, died on a cross, ascended to heaven, rose from the dead and is currently alive and well in heaven. When Mohammad died, he was dead and rose to heaven. He is not alive in heaven as Jesus is.

From about.com
Muslims believe that Jesus (called 'Isa in Arabic) was the son of Mary, and was conceived without the intervention of a human father. The Qur'an describes that an angel appeared to Mary, to announce to her the "gift of a holy son" (19:19). She was astonished at the news, and asked: "How shall I have a son, seeing that no man has touched me, and I am not unchaste?" (19:20). When the angel explained to her that she had been chosen for the service of God, and that God had ordained the matter, she devoutly submitted herself to His will.

So she was magically given a baby by god, but it does not specifically say that she conceived the son of god.

Hi, my name is Nouman Mohammed Khan. And according to the Quran, Jesus is not the Son of God. In a nutshell, Jesus was a Prophet of Allah. But over a period of five centuries, Jesus transformed from a Prophet to a Demi-God-like figure and Allah's message was lost/altered (i.e. Jesus > Allah). The Quran 'corrected' the mistakes that worked their way into the Christian faith (which in its unadulterated form, IS Allah's faith) and imposed stricter rules that when enforced by the State, would allow a society with vastly reduced crime, immorality and all the bad stuff.

So she was both impregnated by god and in essence he was raised by god to be a teacher. Both of which make him in our terms the father. Sorry I do not see a difference. It is true that Muslims do not believe him to be a part of the trinity as they believe god to be one not split. Sorry but it takes two to tango, miracle or not, he is somebody's son.

EDIT: missed a he.

Everybody on Earth is ignorant to a degree.

I for one know that Islam is a monotheistic religion, just like Christianity and Judaism.
The difference of course, is how many sons the omnicreator had. Some say 0, some say 1, some say 2.

To me, that's a minor technicality.

I think that in general, most Americans are ignorant of Islam. I also think that in general, most people who live in countries that are governed by Islamic law, are equally is ignorant about Judaism or Christianity.

Me personally, I'd rather pray to Odin and Thor, but I must admit that I have no faith whatsoever in any sort of "higher existence."

i am American and I am not going to lie I dont know other religions as well as I should. I understand the basic concepts of each religion but I could not go into deep discussion on there fine parts of their beliefs.
