I'm at work... just finished a business call with a guy in Chino california. He had a this "surfer type" accent, and at the end of the call, I said, "Thank you, have a nice Holiday." ... and he responded in his "surfer type" accent: "Sweet Bra (bro?), Thanks."
Do a lot of people in California talk like this?

I've lived in Southern California my entire life and no one talks like that, unless you happen to be Jeff Spicoli.
I find it funny that a lot of people think that many Californians talk like that, or at least the Californian guys do. And as for the girls, they all talk with valley girl type accents. If anything a lot of teens and people tend to conciously try to steer clear of that stereotype ... but there's always a few that tend to ... (I don't know how that happens since majority don't talk like that)

(Born and raised in OC) I really, don't remember meeting many people who talk like that. Or perhaps ... because I'm so used to it, unless they talk like a valley girl I don't seem to notice.

i live in maryland and i say "brah" a lot.
its not the typical 'blonde white surfer' guys who say it around here at all, far from that. its more of an urban word around here, like 'dog'.
ie, "whats up dog?"
"whats up brah?"
same thing. but people dont go around saying "oh yea i know mark, he's my brah" instead of "oh yea i know mark, he's my dog."

I've only met one guy in my life who talks like that. If you actually hang around surfers, you'll find the words they actually use that aren't common English are words related to surfing, just like in any sport or hobby. You probably don't know what "bonking" is if you're not a cyclist, you probably don't know what DDR SDRAM stands for if you're not a computer freak, and you probably don't know what a "floater" is of you don't surf.
The number of surfers that actually walk around saying things like, "Dude, that was totally awesome brah!" in regualr conversation is probably about the same as the number of anandtech members who say things like "OMG! That was uberleet! roxor!" in normal conversation.
