Hello. I remember reading somewhere that 800 MB CDs "Existed". Are they actually sold in stores or are they really 700 MB CDs which you can overburn or something to store 800 MB of data? Thanks.

There are 90 min and 99 min CD's available, i think they are 760MB and 800MB but I'm not 100% sure. You can get them online, but you might not be able to burn them without a fairly recent burner.

I would be interested in getting ahold of some CDs of that size. They will be good for making longer and better quality VCDs. Anyone know of a place that I could check if my drive is compatible with that type of media?

Actually that link l31itz gave was for normal 700mb/80min cds. 90 and 99 minute cdrs do exist, but they cannot be recorded or even read by many devices. CRD-Info has reviews of many CDRW drives and they will tell you the exact maximum burn length of the recorder. Searching on pricewatch should turn up the CDs themselves.

Most of my blanks (incl crapusa free ones) are identified as 99min+ with media ID software. Haven't tried overburning yet.

I tried overburning one of those 99min cd's from Compusa. Didn't work. burned a coaster. You have to have one of the special burners that support it. Wish it were possible to burn a CDR to some larger than normal size with my DVD burner but can't do that either.

I have a number of 90min CD's and burning on them does not seem to be a problem. However, I stopped using them as not all CD Drives can read them and when they do on my drives they take forever to read and register under explorer. I have not tried my DVD burner yet, but if I recall correctly my Plextor Ultraplex40max, Plextor 12/10/32s and Pioneer 105 struggle.

I've got 75 of the Cd's left and they are just taking up space at this time. :)

I know my TDK 40x12x48x (Lite-on at heart) can go up to 99min, and my NEC 40x (Dell) can do 90min.

In fact, most modern burners should be capable of overburning.

I have a spindle of 800MB(90min) CD-Rs, and I've already burnt 1 disc and it works perfectly fine. I'm using an Iomega 48x24x48 drive, which is a Lite-On clone. So yes, they do exist. The max is actually 99min.

More 'tracks' on the CD?

Data is written to the CD in a spiral from the center out towards the edge. The tighter you wind the spiral, the more data you can fit on one CD. Tracks are just markers in the spiral which denote seperations of data within the spiral.
