DNS servers.

I bought a domain name. I'm running my web site off of my computer at home on cable. I wanted to use my own dns server, but registerfly.com doesn't support IP address dns servers (what's up with that).

Those free dns servers I don't think will be good, because I want to have an email server running so that my emails will be whatever@whatever.com but can you do that without running the dns server on my computer? The reason I don't want to use those dns servers on the net is because I don't want my IP address showing up all the time when people load the web site or send me emails and stuff.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

You should be fine using register.com's dns servers - I know at least a half dozen people (including myself) who do it that way. whatever@whatever.com should be fine as long as you put in a DNS "mx" record for "whatever.com" that points to the IP address of your mail server.

Not sure what you mean when you say "I don't want my IP address showing up all the time when people load the web site or send me emails and stuff". How else are they gonna get to your mail server when they send you mail..?

nexus9,

He didn't use Register.com. You're right, though, theirs work just fine.

jsbush,

You paid $9.99 to register your domain and you're whining because it didn't come with all the bells and whistles? You'll be lucky if that outfit is even still around when you need them.

Take blstriker's advice and use ZoneEdit.

Thanks Russ, I haven't check my email yet (since I can only check it from home), but I appreciate the help. The site is slowly building, but like all things, it takes a lot of time and effort. All in all, it's fun. I have some pretty cool stuff coming up that I'd like to run by you for input soon, so I'll email you when it's done. 🙂
