I've had some problems just accessing websites in general. I can log onto AOL and check email, so I know the connection is live.

is there anything i can do to fix it? i've been doing a temporary fix of going to command, and then doing "ipconfig/flushdns" which fixes it momentarily but after visiting, say, 20 websites, it will give me the "the webpage could not be found" error, the standard one you get when you cannot access a website.

my computer is gonna die soon. sigh.

Try using Dr. TCP

We use it in my office to support people in the field who can't see certain sites. We've found there are issues with 2k & XP with some sites and certain DSL providers. I don't know why.

Set the adapter to the adapter you use for connecting to the dsl modem/router.
Set the mtu to 1400
Set the tcp recieve window to 16320.

That solves our problem.

NOTE this is may not work. Its just a hunch.

Have you tried rebuiliding the TCP/IP protocol? Is this net connection thru AOL or an ISP and then AOL? If I do remember, AOL uses their own TCP/IP protocol. If check in your network neighborhood, their is an actual AOL protocol in your network properties.

I do remember some ISPs have issues with AOL software. You might want to contact your ISP if there is fix or something.

although i stupidily was talked into having AOL installed on my computer (its aol for broadband) because someone that uses my comp has an aol account. i balked at having that crap on there but i was HOPING it wouldn't screw it up.

Is it a timing issue? In other words, where every so many minutes it stalls? after you get the error, does it work again in a minute or two?

If yes to the above, if so, consider this fix

hrm it doesn't do it all the time though. like when i first try to get into websites, it will do it, and then after awhile it'll be fine and get through to every website.

Uninstall AOL from the system. See if the problem still occurs. If it does, tell the person get his own computer/internet connection.

Don't forget to reconfigure your internet connection with LAN only and remove the AOL TCP/IP if necessary.

Did you check the startup, run msconfig and see anything AOL is related?

Run the Internet Wizard connection again.

Are you going thru a router? Maybe its the NIC card.

How big is internet temp files directory, long shot, but increase the size of it and see if it helps.

how do i run the startup?

I'm just curious if any weird .exe is screwing with your internet connection. I would just run the bare minimum, unless for sure you need it like lets say an antivirus program.

You might try running zone alarm and see what weird programs are accesssing the net.

Like newbiepcuser mentioned, try deleting and then reinstalling the TCP/IP protocol on your LAN card settings.

If that doesn't work, you might want to try entering your DNS settings manually. Find out the IP addresses of your ISP's DNS servers are and enter them manually.
