Just rebooted. I can no longer see network shares on ei3000 by doing start/run/ \\ei3000 - I'm forced to use the FQDN again.

Based on the fact that I'm now using WINS and hybrid nodes, I don't think this is a WINS issue.

Any other ideas? 🙁

Ok, you'll need the blood of a newborn goat, the feather from a South African Ostrich.....
Oh nevermind, have you tried kicking it?

Have you tried other nodes like mixed maybe?

I really am out of ideas and haven't been much help so far.
I wish you good luck.

well crap. why didn't you mention that you are running VMware in the original post???

you have a seriously messed up network configuration judging from the output of net config server.

Please post exactly how this is setup. all machines, all IP addresses, all VMs.

Windows does not like more than one IP address/IP interface at any one time. Especially when it comes to browsing/bindings.

Just from glancing over the output you've got different subnets on different adapters (VM or not) all over the place. This isn't a production system is it?

This isn't a VMWare issue. I can replicate this problem on a laptop that isn't running VMWare. Also, it's normal for VMWare to assign different IPs to its' virtual NICs. When one isn't hard coded, they get random IP addresses.

How is net config server messed up exactly?

I am not running VMs presently. Server ei3000 is 192.168.3.4, clients get assigned an address in the 192.168.3.125+ range. It's very simple.

Again, this isn't a VMWare issue - I've got the same issue on other machines. And Microsoft's virtual software does the same virtual NIC business - this is nothing new or unusual.

It's not so simple.

You have IP addresses all over the place with a class C mask.

I'm really trying to help you here...I know it doesn't make sense for somebody that doesn't know much about networking (again, not a put down...just that sometimes there is a serious disconnect between server guys and network guys.)

I copied pasted what you have and bolded the important information. If I ever saw a server with interfaces in different layer2 networks (different IP subnet/broadcast domain) I would immediately disconnect it and say 'try again', this is a known issue with windows.

I'm not trying to be mean, I'm trying to be firm in the hopes that you will listen to me and not refute what I am saying. It might be best if we clean up this mess one box at a time.

----------------------------------

you are running the server service (netbios) on what windows thinks is 3 interfaces. This is NOT supported as the server/WINS service can only be run on one logical interface.

It is a known issue with windows. It is documented all over micrsoft as 'problems with network browsing/netbios name resolution with multihomed servers'

It is hard to convey emotions on a board and I am probably coming across as being a know it all jerk, but like I said...I'm really trying to help.

You have a serious disconnect between layers 2, 3 and 5.

If this is a VMWare issue, why am I having exactly the same issue on another machine without VMWare? In any case, I'll uninstall VMWare and see if anything changes. At this moment it's working. 🙂

Its not necessarily a VMware issue, it is an issue with running the server service on multiple IP interfaces.

(read having the server service bound to multiple IP interfaces) Since browsing is a broadcast concept it doesn't like having multiple entries in the browe list. So what is happening is client see a master browser or announcement from an IP address that is not reachible via a layer2 broadcast. Even with WINS that is a no-no.

there is a lot more to it of course, but windows boxes really should only have one IP address/NIC to avoid this very problem.

Why am I having this issue on machines without VMWare? Note that this machine (formerly with VMWare) spends much of its' time off - the other machine still has problems showing the shares on ei3000....

because that's the way netbios works. when it was invented/developed there was no such thing as a computer on a different IP subnet/broadcast domain. And hence its operation was modeled after that assumption.

We can really get much, much deeper into this. much deeper. Much, much deeper.

But it is what it is. that is the way the protocol operates.

Just because a computer is 'off' doesn't mean that all the other computers aren't asking it for a list of resources for hours before they figure out that that list of resources isn't responding - then they spend a few hours trying to figure out who is responsible for that list of resources.

It's long, it's complicated, do a search on some of the stuff I posted earlier.

I'll sum it up as best as possible:

"the client asks the wire who to contact for resources, sometimes the client doesn't get an answer and has to guess, sometimes the client gets the phone number of somebody who isn't ansering, sometimes the client gets the wrong phone number, many times the client is asking things from the wrong people who don't even understand the language the client is speaking and therefore ignores them."
