Can someone out there explain DNS is easy to understand terms?

I know it translates IP to names, and

MX.name.com is email director

but what else is there?
 
If you really want to know how DNS works I would recommend purchasing the O'Reilly book 'DNS and Bind', it's written by the guy who conjured up DNS originally IIRC.

And for the record MX.name.com is not a mail redirector, the MX record is different than MX.name.com.
