dns error

I am trying to connect two computers directly without a hub using only NIC's. The cable has been cross crimped. On both the systems (one is win95 and the other is win98se)after entering the name and password I get the Message "no domain server was available to verify the password....." After that only the same computers are visible on both the systems. What could be wrong ?
Please help.

You may have selected log on to and NT domain. Deslect that if you did since this is strictly peer to peer.
