DNS crashes on request?

I've set up my Vaio to use the internet with my school's broadband. I put in the numbers correctly for all fields, and was able to ping my IP address, my friend's IP address, and the DNS IP address. Whenever anything calls a DNS resolve, however, I get a blue window saying "Fatal error..." and I'm forced to close down the program (telnet, IE, ping..). Any suggestions how to fix?
