I played it A LOT in high school, and a pretty decent amount in college. Hell, when I got out of college I DM'd some Star Wars campaigns with some friends.

Lately though, I've only done some persisten worlds in NWN. It's sort of like D&D lite, without the preparation and can hook up with friends that are several hours away a lot easier.
 
I've always used the books as a reference, but always created my own rulesets and character sheets. The standard rules blow, too much crappy useless stuff.
