DNC vote on Jerusalem in platform

Yikes! It looks like the Demos are not going to restore the original platform language re Israel.

The attempt to put some language, any language, into the platform met with a vocal "NO!" by what seems like a majority of delegates, and definitely from the Arab and Palestinian contingents of Democrat delegates.

The weak sauce replacement language has further pissed off both American Jews and Israelis who see this as another example of Obama's disinterest in Israel's future.

DNC PLATFORM STILL GUTS PRO-ISRAEL LANGUAGE

Despite yesterday’s chaos on the floor of the Democratic National Convention in an attempt to restore Jerusalem and God to the Democratic Party 2012 platform, full pro-Israel language from the 2008 platform has not been and will not be restored. The current Democratic platform regarding Israel had a couple sentences restored yesterday:

Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths.

But the full language of the 2008 platform is still gone:

The United States and its Quartet partners should continue to isolate Hamas until it renounces terrorism, recognizes Israel’s right to exist, and abides by past agreements. Sustained American leadership for peace and security will require patient efforts and the personal commitment of the President of the United States. The creation of a Palestinian state through final status negotiations, together with an international compensation mechanism, should resolve the issue of Palestinian refugees by allowing them to settle there, rather than in Israel. All understand that it is unrealistic to expect the outcome of final status negotiations to be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949.
Each and every sentence of this is important. If the Democratic Party no longer believes that the United States and its partners should isolate Hamas, refuses to acknowledge that return to 1949 armistice lines is disastrous, and doesn’t think that the so-called “right of return” which would destroy Israel as a Jewish state is a non-starter, there’s nothing to talk about: the Party has excised virtually every important element from its Israel plank.

President Obama saw this platform before it was approved. He did not object.

He still does not object to the excision of anti-Hamas language and preconditions to negotiations that would actually make a lasting peace possible. The Democratic Party platform is still dramatically more anti-Israel than its past platforms. And yesterday’s fiasco was only the start of the problem.

Of course, Obama and his surrogates are blaming "others."

David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett played cleanup this morning on the Democratic platform mess, blaming ‘others’ for allowing ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘God’ to drop out of the platform language.

“Honestly Charlie, he was counting on others, he had some other duties and responsibilities so when he learned that it had been taken out of the platform, he had it put back in,” Axelrod said, explaining that the President learned about the missing language yesterday.

Mayor Corey Booker and former Gov. Ted Strickland of Ohio were both part of the platform drafting process.

With many anticipating an Israeli strike against Iran before November, this latest Democrat waffling has added a touch of gasoline to the fire.

Thread locked until factually false troll thread title is addressed. You can make your point about the changes in language without stretching the basic facts. http://www.democrats.org/democratic-national-platform

How can the US claim to be a fair and impartial mediator of the Israel-Palestinian peace process if it has language that supports one side but not the other?

The Palestinian supporter delegates at the convention sure were looking for some kind of a prop.

Why exactly should America unquestioningly and always support what Israel wants? We owe them nothing, we've done everything for them for decades, and they refuse to get their own house in order by acting like human beings and allow self-determination, a principle America used to champion. The only practical reason is that there is an important Floridian Jewish voter base that cares, but that's hardly a good reason to let Israel draw us into yet another Middle East / World War.

Agreed. While I have no ill will toward Israel I fail to see why I should be responsible for them.

The Democrats are starting to look at Israel like Ron Paul, none of our fucking business.

You know how it is when you give welfare to a state. They get lazy and won't come to the negotiating table. No welfare without work.

There are quite a lot of U.S. ties to Israel, particularly in the tech industry.

And their cows are way better than ours.

Science & Technology

Israel leads the world in the number of scientists and technicians in the workforce, 63% more than the U.S. It also has the most physicians and engineers per capita.

Israel’s scientific research institutions are ranked 3rd in the world.

Israel is ranked 2nd in space sciences.

Israel produces the 3rd most scientific papers per capita, and the most in stem cell science.

More Israeli patents are registered in the United States than from Russia, India and China combined (combined population 2.5 billion). It leads the world in patents for medical equipment.

Israeli companies invented the drip irrigation system, discovered the world’s most used drug for multiple sclerosis, designed the Pentium NMX Chip technology and the Pentium 4 and Centrium microprocessors, created Instant Messenger (ICQ), and Israeli cows produce more milk per cow than any other in the world.

Business

Israel has the 3rd highest rate of entrepreneurship among women in the world.

Israel has attracted the most venture capital investment per capita in the world, 30 times more than Europe.

Israel has more NASDAQ-listed companies than any country besides the US - more than all of Europe, India, China and Japan combined.

In proportion to its population, Israel has the largest number of startup companies in the world. In absolute numbers, Israel has more startups than any country other than the U.S.

Why the fuck does anyone care about Isreal? I sure dont. They should not be our problem to deal with.

Why the fuck does anybody care about other human beings. You care becuse you're alive and feel. The question is how do you care and make a difference. Of all the millions of ways one can think one is caring, what really works, what brings success, what makes things better.

Sounds exactly like the Palestinians.

Support them; shower them with $$; why should they have to answer for their actions?

they had 30- years to get a state while the land was under Arab control.
They refused hoping for the whole package;
They gambled, lost and want to be rewarded.

Let the Dem platform act neutral; when push comes to shove; everyone knows what will be the end result.

Someday you will learn about possessives and the English language.

Normally, I'm not a spelling or grammar Nazi, but you just annoy the F out of me.

Exactly, that was some impressive self-ownage. From Israel we get one of our better allies plus a LOT of tech - the Pentium Pro and its successor the Core 2, for example, along with a buttload of military technical assistance. From Palestine we get suicide bombers and a place to send our dumbest actors when they want to look less shallow.
