DNA Tests Confirm Bear Was a Hybrid

DNA Tests Confirm Bear Was a Hybrid

IQALUIT, Nunavut - Northern hunters, scientists and people with vivid imaginations have discussed the possibility for years.

But Roger Kuptana, an Inuvialuit guide from Sachs Harbour, North West Territories, was the first to suspect it had actually happened when he proposed that a strange-looking bear shot last month by an American sports hunter might be half polar bear, half grizzly.

Territorial officials seized the creature after noticing its white fur was scattered with brown patches and that it had the long claws and humped back of a grizzly. Now a DNA test has confirmed that it is indeed a hybrid _ possibly the first documented in the wild.

"We've known it's possible, but actually most of us never thought it would happen," said Ian Stirling, a polar bear biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service in Edmonton.

Polar bears and grizzlies have been successfully paired in zoos before _ Stirling could not speculate why _ and their offspring are fertile.

Breeding seasons for the two species overlap, though polar bear gets started slightly earlier.

Interesting. Now we know that grizzlies can breed with polar bears. Does this have any other widespread ramifications?

in the mountains

The bears are everywhere

BEWARE LOOKOUT LOOKOUT

The bears they don't care who they scare!

I guess this disproves that song by Loverboy...

Or it was a throw-back. Polar bears being a sub species of the Grizzly.

Now all we need to do is some how mix in the Liger, an elephant, and a great white shark - then we'd have some big game worthy of hunting...

Settle down Beavis...

He was on a leagally guided polar bear hunt. He pulled the trigger on what he thought was a polar bear. Turned out to be a freak of nature. It was gonna be dead in 20 or so years anyway.

If yer one of those global warming whackos then you can rest assured that polar bears and grizzlies will mix much more often over the next few decades.

Either way there's not much to be upset about this.

Good lord... He didn't know what he'd shot untill the DNA came back. The bunny huggers are making it sound like he hunted down and killed a one of a kind animal just to be original. Like he was sighting in a jackalope or a pro-life democrat or something. Jeez...

Edit: This made it into P&N as well... To wit I had this comment...

This bear was taken in a fairly remote part of the world where there are thousands of people scattered over millions of square miles of land. One of two things are possible here.

1. The hunter in question is the luckiest SOB alive and really took the only known example of a Polar/Grizz encounter in the wild.
2. Polar/Grizz combos are more common than we know about. So common, in fact, that there are now enough of them so that they might accidentally wander in front of a guy's scope.

I'm inclined to believe #2.

agreed, except the 20-year argument. you'll be dead in x or so years anyways, but that's not a good reason to just go ahead and shoot you.

But we already have ManBearPig: half man, half bear, and half pig.

😕
