DMV messed up my car

Went to get car inspected - it passed, of course. Got back into car afterwards and attempted to roll up drivers' side window. It won't roll up! It's broken! Horrors!

What, if anything, could they have possibly done to the car door during inspection that might have broken the manual roll-up mechanism? It's been fine until now.

I assume it's coincidence (12-yr-old minivan) but still, I'm suspicious.

Duct tape and plastic here I come 🙁 .

Maybe they rolled the window down without paying attention, and broke the drive mechanism. What happens when you try to crank it? It might be an easy fix.

I am confused . . other than emissions testing, what does the DMV inspect on a car?

I am confused too... I thought car inspections were done at certified mechanic shops.

Where do you go to get inspected that you leave your car?

Paramus NJ DMV Inspection Station (live cam) http://njcam.appsolgrp.com/waitqueue/jsp/waitqueuedisplay.jsp?facilityName=Paramus

Pretty sure they mainly do emissions testing these days. Maybe lights or something. I think they tested the horn too - sure sounded like it. Yes, you have to get out of the car.

Emissions testing in AZ: You get out of the car, and into a small closet with a sliding door. They plug a hose to the exhaust pipe and a diagnostic device into the car's computer. Takes a few minutes. There's no rolling down windows, testing lights, horns, whatnot.

I can crank it up about half way and then it stops solid. I can roll it back down but it stops at the same place every time I try to close it. Feels like something will break if I try to force it.

On a brighter note, the car runs well. And it's paid for.

You strike me as being fairly handy with tools. Pop open the door panel a little bit, and look inside. What its hanging up on might be obvious.

If it's been expired for a while, or from out of state it usually goes through this process. They check the overall condition of the car, like all the lights working, no major mechanical problems, brakes work, etc. The biggest thing they do though is go through all the vin numbers in the different locations the car and make sure they all match up.

If it was a salvage or non-op I think it goes through this too.

Did you try pulling up on it while you crank? Maybe do a little jiggling while you crank. The window, not you.

This. It always gets mine to go up. Sometimes all it needs is a little lubrication in addition to the pulling and jiggling while you crank it. Or you can take it somewhere and get them to crank on it for you.

Here in Dub-Vee they check your brakes, lights and make sure the tires are safe and body doesnt have any all the way through rust holes etc. But at a mechanic for something like $12 a year
