Hey guys,

So I bought a Lexus from my neighbor (first car of my own!) up here in NYS while I'm visiting my dad. I need to get it registered in Virginia which is where I'll be starting my job out of college.

So I got the loan from my credit union, paid my neighbor, she pays off the lien from Toyota motor corp. She picks up here new ES330 and things are all good, right? Wrong.

Figuring out this interstate DMV titling stuff is driving me nuts. I have this title with the now expired lien, I need to get temporary tags from NYSDMV, drive it to Virginia and then get a new title there.

Should be easy but it seems rough - I'm waiting for a Lien release from Toyota, so in the meantime I have an incorrect title and have no idea what the process is once i get to Virginia. What the hell should I expect?

Cliffs: Bought a car in NY, need to register it in VA. NY title has an old lien that will probably complicate tings in VA.

Anyone buy an out of state private party car that can shed some light on this frustrating process? Thanks
 
Sheesh. I don't have any suggestions, OP. Sorry.

It's a nightmare when everything is done in the SAME state. In fact, DMV is a horror, period.

I would pull over on the way to virginia and stop to help a stranded motorist. Hit them on the head with a tire iron, stuff them in the trunk. Take their plates and roll the car into a lake. Use those plates until you get this sorted out and have plates of your own, then hide the old plates above your evil-lord shrine and blood drawn pentagram in your sacrificial basement.

This is what worked for me, anyway.

Anyways, yes I am worried I won't be issued plates at the VA DMV, since the NY DMV needs my title to process the lien removal, krikey.

A bit 1984 but sometimes I wish there was a federal DMV so i could do everything from one place.
