DMA

You can turn it on for the controller in the BIOS and on the HDD using a boot hard drive utility. You will have to get the latter from the drive manufacturer's website.

Now - I don't know for a fact that you cna toggle DMA at the drive level and not on the controller. But, I know the boot disk allows you to turn on SMART, acoustic management and other things like that. Hitiachi Drive Tools is what I use - it works for lots of drives.
 
Go to device manager, expand your ide channel branch, right click the appropriate channel(primary or secondary), pick properties, then advanced options, then select dma if available. You may have to reboot to make changes effective, I can't remember.
