My computer lags when ripping, IE: copying a CD... someone told me to check to see if DMA is enabled for it, and sure enough, it is, but its only running in PIO mode

i have it set like this:
VIA Controller: Primary: Master: DVD Drive Toshiba SD-M1402
VIA Controller: 2ndary: Master: Plextor 16x10x40x
VIA Controller: 2ndary: Slave: Mitsumi 4x2x8x
AMI Controller: Primary: Master: Maxtor 45gb 7200rpm
AMI Controller: 2ndary: Master: WD 30gb 5400rpm

In the bios, the PIO mode for each of the VIA channels is enabled as "AUTO" and DMA is set to "If Available" (the other option is disabled)

In winXP, for the primary VIA channel, it says, DMA if availible, and PIO as current. For the 2ndary channel i have, DMA if available for both, and MultiWord DMA Mode 2 for the plextor and PIO for the Mitsumi (why am i not surprised)

so why wont my DVD Drive, which used to work fine, under this installation of windows, all of a sudden, refuse to work properly... it will still transfer data, but its godawful annoying to have to quit what i'm doing to burn a CD...

software installed that has to do with CDs is... Media Player 8, Nero 5.5.5.1, CloneCD 2.8.5.1, Gainward PowerDVD, and WinISO... there may be more, but thats all i know of off the top of my head.

i have the latest 4in1's (4.37?) and winXP fully updated, what could be the cause of all this homotasticity?

Try manually setting the dma in the bios...don't settle for if available just set it do dma...

Also everything is checked in windows properly???

You may wish to check in the registry and see if there are multiple listings of the drive....

I've got to say I'm having a similar problem, although on a very different board. I have an Intel i815E MB, and I have a 2 WD HD's on the Primary channel, they are both running in DMA just fine. On the secondary channel I have a Toshiba SD-M1212 DVD in Device 0 and a Phillips 8/4/32 CD/RW drive as Device 1. The DVD is stuck in PIO mode. Nothing I can do will enable it. The CDRW is in Multiword DMA Mode 2. I have altered my BIOS settings to try and force DMA, but it still reports PIO in WindowsXP. The only commonality I can see is the DVD drive is made by Toshiba. Maybe a problem with XP and Toshiba drives?

I think multiword DMA isn't a whole lot better.... I know sometimes you need to be in a specific power mode to run DMA, ACPI is the standard I think. Unfortunetly, even if you change it in your bios, you need to reinstall windows to get the benefits

Wierd, I have an Asus P3B-f (the BX chipset) with one WD harddrive using DMA and two cdroms (one DVD drive and one CDRW) that are both in PIO mode. No matter what I do, the CDroms are always in PIO mode. I have tried forcing them in the Bios, in win2k (DMA mode if available option), and tried switching the master/slave. When I copy stuff to my hard drive like mp3s it goes reaaaaally slow. Like 300 megs in two minutes. :disgust:

>>so what, remove the ide controller using device manager? or what?

Exactly. Remove the IDE/ATAPI controller from device manager. Reboot. Let it redetect your IDE channels and drives. Reboot. It should redetect correctly. I now have device 0 set as Ultra DMA Mode 2, and the Device 1 as Multi-Word DMA Mode 2.
