DMA not enabled on my HD???

a while ago i switch the cables for the CD-ROM's and the HD. after the switch it takes about 30 seconds to start windows, which is much slower than before

i switched back the cables, same thing happened. checked all the cables, checked all the jumper settings to auto detect, still won't change back

today i installed my tv tuner and it says that "DMA IS NOT ENABLED ON YOUR HARD DRIVE AND IT WILL SLOW DOWN BLAH BLAH.."

and now copying and pasting takes forever on my HD too.

so how do i enable DMA for my WD1200JB? windows says it works properly. should i reinstall windows or remove the HD in windows?

please help

Delete the IDE controller in your device manager if you are running XP. What happens is after so many DMA errors XP reverts back to a "safe" level.

Deleting and reinstalling the IDE controller fixes it .

Right CLick "My Computer > Properties
Hardware Tab > Device Manger
IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

check the properties of those badboy

or you could go into device manager properties for the IDE controller and just reenable DMA.

You can't just renable it in XP, it won't let you if it errored it out of DMA mode.

ok so i went into device manager and primary it says that the HD is in PIO mode
in secondary it says that my CDRW is in UDMA and my cd-rom is in PIO as well

and i cannot change the setting. i already set it to "DMA if available" but it's still stuck in PIO mode

so should i delete BOTH of the IDE controllers? and then restart, right?

did you set it to DMA if available and then reboot?
if that doesn't work, then delete teh ide controllers ..
but i'd go into BIOS and force DMA if it's available as an option

Most modern CD-roms are DMA2, though an older one may be PIO.

IDE cable has an effect as well..

it's a lite-on 48X cdrw on master and a 40x cd rom on slave

when i enable DMA on those, my HD is back on PIO and slows down again

The slave may be preventing DMA from being active on the channel. I am pretty sure the liteon is DMA capable.

Do you by chance have a new win install and a via board? This was happening to me until I installed the 4in1's

things were fine even after a fresh WIN2k install but messed up when i messed with the cables

im pretty sure that i installed the VIA 4 in 1 driver already (on a KT333 board)

so would having my lite-on burner on PIO affect it performance in any way?

with PIO you will likely be limited to a very slow writing speed, like 4x.

Can you try some new cables?
