This is my problem:
ENABLE DMA IN SECONDARY IDE SLAVE.
This is my configuration:

OS: XP ( FULLY (CLEAN) INSTALLED)

MB: Shuttle AK31 rev 3.1

BIOS VERSION: AK31S2EF (SUPPORT OF XP2000)DATE :01/04/2002

4ON1 DRIVERS: 4.37

PROCESSOR: ATHLON XP 1700 ( NOT OVERCLOCKED) @ 1466 MHz

MEMORY : 1GIGABYTE DDR Micron PC2100

GRAPHIC CARD; NVIDIA GFORCE 2 MX 400

HD: WD CAVIAR 60 GB @ 7200 rpm

POWER SUPPLY : ENLIGHT 300 W

CDRW: TEAC CD-W524E (24x10x40) REPLACING LITEON 16102B

DVD: AFREEY 12X DVD ROM (Support ULTRA DMA 33 & PIO MODE 4)

SYMPTOMS:
1-INSTALLED DVD AS MASTER ON SECONDARY IDE = DMA2 ENABLED
2-INSTALLED CDRW AS SLAVE ON SECONDARY IDE = GOES TO PIO MODE
3-CHANGE TO ENABLE DMA ON THE SECONDARY IDE SLAVE = THE CDRW DISAPPEAR FROM THE DEVICE MANAGER.
4- CDRW WORKS ON PIO MODE BUT SLOW THE COMPUTER TO A CRAWL AND TAKES LONG TIME TO BURN A CD.
5-CDRW RECOGNIZED BY OS AS TEAC W524E ON THE DEVICE MANAGER
6-DVD RECOGNIZED AS DVD 12X ON THE DEVICE MANAGER
7-MY COMPUTER -PROPERTIES RECOGNIZE THE TEAC AS A CDRW
DID THE SAME TRICK WITH THE LITEON DRIVE?
BOTH DRIVES ARE RECOGNIZED BY THE BIOS AT START AS A DMA 2 CAPABLE DEVICES
THE HARD DRIVE IN THE PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL IS CORRECT AS A UDMA MODE 5

PROCEDURES TRIED:
1- PUT THE DVD AS A SLAVE MAKES THE 2 DEVICES DISAPPEAR FROM THE DEVICE MANAGER WITH THE SECONDARY IDE
2- INSTALLED THE CDRW AS MASTER (ALONE ) AND SHOWS DMA CAPABLE IN THE SECONDARY IDE (WITHOUT THE DVD).
3- INSTALLED EITHER OF THE DRIVES ON THE PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL SLOW DOWN THE HARD DRIVE TO DMA 2.
4- TRIED THE VIA IDE BY MICROSOFT= NO RESULT
TRIED THE STANDARD MICROSOFT IDE =NO RESULT
TRIED THE VIA IDE MASTER IDE = NO RESULT.
Please help me on this I am really clueless on this one?.feel free to reach at my AIM
Thank you

Whenever I enable any of the DMA modes in a CD or DVD or CDR or CDRW or whatever the system went berserk so... u could try this solution or go crazy. I have a your TEAC with a Toshiba 24x (oldie) and works fine on any configuration. Sometimes a solution to this problem was to use the 80pin cable instead of the classic 40pin standard. But it worked sometimes only.

STOP THE PRESS-EUREKA - I GOT IT.
For all of you baffled with this UDMA (DMA) Mistery.
I will tell You how I solved in my specific case.
Please be aware of my configuration and my problem.I hope this will help You
This "little" problem has been cranking my brain for 2 weeks.
Basically what i did was, on the BIOS screen I change the "auto" detecting for "NONE" for every single drive , the CDRW and the DVD, save my settings reboot and let XP figure out the settings.
VOILA!!! Secondary IDE channel show the Master an the Slave working in "Multiword DMA Mode 2"
Wich improved the performance of the whole System.....STOP THE PRESS-EUREKA - I GOT IT.

My humble opinion is that the BIOS from SHUTTLE or the specific IDE controller supported by VIA is not recognized or create conflicts with the "native" ide controller built on XP. Therefore by disabling the ones on the BIOS ( FIRST STEP) allow the OS to look for the next good IDE controller, the "built in" XP Ide controller , which loads at the beginning of the installation on the blue screen at the bottomon the grey color area that shows what is being loaded before the installation.Do this makes some sense?:D

I had similar problem too few months back,my Maxtor D740X was listed as Ultra DMA 1 in WinXP so what I did then was change the auto setting on primary master in "intergrated peripherals" to ATA-100 and since then my Maxtor is listed as Ultra DMA 5 .Btw my board is an Epox 8KHA+.
