dma enable

how do i ensure that i have dma enabled/
i am running win2k on a dell 400sc 3.2 ghz but the dvd drive seems slow

Well, I can tell you how to see what mode the drive is in...

First, know what drive it is (primary slave, secondary master, etc.). Then go to start>settings>control panel>system>hardware>device manager. Go down to IDE/ATAPI controllers, open it. Select the IDE channel that your DVD is on. Then click advanced....you can see what mode the drive is in (drive 0= master, drive 1=slave).

As long as the channel is set to 'PIO', it should enable DMA automatically....

the reason i ask (i have set both the bios and the ide controllers to enable dma) is that when i installed powerdvd, it pops up with that little screen asking if u want to set the drives to enable dma (and i thought they already were enabled). I tried to select it to enable it just for the heck of it but when i do that the system crashes/reboots. Also when i use softsandra it seems to test out as 3x as well as when i rip a dvd to my hard drive it takes 40 minutes and i could have sworn it only took 15 minutes or less on my atholon 1 gig system.

Enable DMA in Device Manager as JC said, except set the setting to "DMA if available." Reboot when prompted and go back into Device Manager to ensure that the setting stuck.

D'oh! I meant that to be, 'as long as the channel isn't set to 'PIO'.....😱

thanks for the suggestions and i just rechecked
it does say that it is in ultra dma mode

the funny thing at least i dont remember this before is that in the device manager i have 2 primary and 2 secondary ide channels as well as 2 standard dual channel pci ide controllers listed.

the first one for each says ultra dma mode enabled and the second one says not applicable for current transfer mode
i tried deleteing them and rebooting just to see what happens but they were rerecognized and all 4 are set for dma if available

theres an "edit" button, you know.

btw, are you sure you're not ripping multilayer DVDs?

Actually, on a modern Intel system it should be enabled from the Intel Application Accellerator program 🙂

Make sure you install it and use the Intel application to check settings.

Actually, Intel no longer supports it for OTHER chipsets, but the final version is still somewhat new and works great. For the 875, look for "Intel Application Accellerator RAID Edition"

i just tried the raid edition (even though i dont have raid) and it gave me the same message

(its so nice that roadrunner increased down speed to 3k)

It must require the ICH5-R southbridge then. Hmm, I guess the latest Intel INF update + Windows' DMA setting should be enough. Has the "INF update" been installed?

As a filename extention typically used for driver installations, it means "Setup Information" (It's what Plug 'n' Play runs when it sees the file, plus you can manually run with a right-click)

A few applications use INF files to install instead of executable files (ie, TweakUI)

Many PnP devices recuire nothing more than an INF to install (PnP Monitors for instance, only need to report the VGA capabilities to the OS through an INF)

The Intel INF Update is significantly more than that though. It is necessary for correct motherboard hardware installation. My D850GB motherboard (i850 chipset, + ICH3) has no DMA checkbox in Win98 until I run the INF Update, and would crash in 3Dmark2001 without it. Contrary to popular belief, the default IDE drivers in Win98 are not universal for integrated chipsets. It also installs the correct USB support and System Management Bus, AGP and various motherboard chipset-specific hardware.

Intel's INF Update works much like nVidia's Detonator / Unified Driver Architecture initiative. It supports all modern Intel boards and all modern versions of Windows with one executable. With XP, many boards no longer require it for DMA support but it's still required for much else.

i installed the prg but no dice (ie no change in speed)
maybe the prb is with softsandra
are there any other good dvd speed tests
