Just found out that on tuesday an update will be pushed to the dvr enabling DLNA on it. The official blurb is that this will allow you to watch recorded programs on dlna devices.

Will this just take plugging a network cable into the dvr box and using WMCE or similar program to access the dvr through the network?

You will need a DLNA device with a compatible DLNA version. WMC won't work as a DLNA device though there may be compatible software you can install, or your Cable Co might provide the software.

It's hard to provide any detailed information though because you didn't give any specifics about your Cable Co or DVR so everyone is left in the dark. That information might lead to more thorough responses to your question.

In the short term it's unlikely WMP will be able to play those recordings unless MS updates it to so do. I did some digging about DLNA "Premium Video." DLNA.org tries to make it sound like any DLNA-enabled device is compatible but that is not the case. In order to be compatible with DLNA Premium Video the DLNA device has to support the DTCP IP protocol. Currently only one consumer device does that - the PS3.
