DLLHOST.EXE taking up to 50% CPU Resources?

After sorting some pictures and music files the other day I noticed my computer bogged down to the point of frozen molasses. It would take up to 7 second just to expand a window, it was almost impossible to drag and drop any item without the item ended up in the wrong destination, etc. If I tried to delete a file during this incident, it would bring up the recycle bin window saying "discovering items..." and it would just stay like that until I clicked cancel., which usually resulted in an unexpected shutdown immediately thereafter.

I opened the task manager and checked the running processes, and I noticed two instances of DLLHOST.EXE running (one was simply DLLHOST.EXE, the other was DLLHOST.EXE *32). While these were both running, my computer use percentage was at 100% and I couldn't do anything other than shut down the computer.

After entering Windows again, I immediately checked the task manager and noticed only one DLLHOST.EXE running, but it was still taking a constant 50% of CPU use. I could tell the computer was still running slow, but then after exporting a music file from a program called Cubase, it got super slow again, and DLLHOST.EXE *32 showed up again. I ended the process tree for DLLHOST.EXE *32 and it work, leaving just the single DLLHOST.EXE that was still taking up 50%. I'm not really sure what these files are needed for, and my virus detectors don't pick up anything.

In case this makes any difference, the original DLLHOST.EXE is located in windows/system32 while the DLLHOST.EXE *32 is located in windows/syswow64. I can't close DLLHOST.EXE, but I can close DLLHOST.EXE *32 through the task manager (even though it inevitably comes back).

So, these files seem to be taking up all my CPU resources, and I know for a fact that my computer is running way, way, way slower than it should be.

Here are my specs, if it even matters:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo e6850
Patriot DDR3 1333 8gb
Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB
xFx Geforce GX2 9800 x2
Sound Blaster Audigy ZS

If anyone has any info on these DLLHOST.EXE files, what I can do to get away from this intensive CPU usage problem, or any other information.. Please let me know. At this point it's almost impossible to use the computer because the second DLLHOST.EXE *32 file can pop up at any time and slow everything down to a standstill. Thanks in advance.

turn off file indexing service, and run a registry cleanup. A scan for malware might not be a bad idea either. All can cuase high demands like that. windows is awesome !
