Dlink router keeps locking up

I have a nice new Dlink DI-604 (Hardware revision E3) that keeps locking up.

It will work fine for a day, then the port my main computer is on wil just lock up. The other computers in my house still work fine, but my main computer won't even be able to ping the router. If I reboot the router, everything will be fine for another day.

I have the 3.51 firmware, which is the latest revision I could find at the dlink web site, and I have already tried exchanging the router. The new one does the same thing as the old one.

There are no entries in the router's log.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be happening, and how I can fix this?

Thanks,

Steve

I too have a DI-604 w/ 3.51 firmware. Not sure what hardware revision though.
It's been working w/o any problem for the past 3 years.

Have you tried plugging the main computer into a different port?? If it still locks up it may be your NIC, cable, or PC. (I know you said once router reboots the connection becomes fine but you never know)

Is it possibly a problem with your specific PC? I know that my wireless card's driver can't handle a lot of connections. If I don't seriously ramp down the number of connections eMule or Bittorrent uses from their defaults, I will lose all network functionality on my PC. It breaks and nothing works. Can't ping, can't renew IP, can't access the Internet.... nothing. But a reboot of my computer will fix it. I've never tried to see if rebooting the router also fixes it.

Maybe you're having the too many connections problem?

Before I got the dlink, everything was running for a year on an SMC router without any problems whatsoever. My first thought was that it was a port problem and I switched to a different port on the dlink. I have also tried different cables. I even exchanged the router for a new one on the chance I got a bad unit. The new one does the same thing. I tend to think it is the router because 1) the router is the thing that changed when things went from stable to unstable. 2) I can fix the problem without touching my PC. Searching the net, I find that there are some other posts about dlinks locking up, but none that are recent, and there are a lot of other posts from folks like Cooky that haven't had any problems.

The too many connections is a thought - I do have emule running. Does dlink have more trouble handling the traffic than SMC? Is there somewhere else that might have a newer version of the firmware than November of last year?

I think by default eMule is set to accept like 400 connections or something really high like that. Try setting it to 60. Then if that doesn't work go down by 10s. Also in Extended Settings, there is a value for making x new connections every second. By default it is 15. That works for me, but some people report having to set it to 10.

Have you tried re-flashing the router's firmware? Even to the same verson?

Well, I tried reducing the emule connection settings, and I disabled upnp. If anything the problem is getting worse. I had to reboot twice last night and once this morning. I haven't tried flashing the firmware because it shows that I already have the latest version. I can't believe there has been no updates in a year. I will try re-flashing this evening. I think it may be time to start thinking about gitting rid of the D-link getting something else.
