DLC and feeling ripped off

Ok - mild rant. Picked up Soul Calibur IV for $35 at Gamestop. Went home, checked it out, played it, blah blah, saw that there was "downloadable content". So I give it a shot - ooh extra armor and items!

So I pay $1.99 and I get a handful items out of the deal, which I haven't even used one of yet for custom character equipment. What's the point of offering little bull$hit DLC like this? The Yoda DLC for $5 seems actually worth while for star wars fans, but seriously WTF is with 3 different "armor packs" that only have just a few items each? They should just toss that into the game for free.

/end of weak rant.

I love free DLC I must say... Love it so much.

When Burnout kept updating and adding stuff to the game well after I had already beat it, made me go back and revisit the game... for free it is awesome

I think the worst DLC is the stuff that comes on the disc, but you still have to pay a decent chunk of change for it. The worst offender that I've seen is probably Konami with DDR.

I was lured in by false premise. I thought it would be some awesome badass set of armor that would help me get through the tower faster.

I really enjoyed the free DLC Burnout offered. The paid DLC is WAY overpriced though. WAY. WAY overpriced.

Oh. I haven't played the game, so I don't keep up on the DLC. I'd like to say I would have googled to see what I'm getting, but for $2 I probably wouldn't have bothered checking. Then again I buy very little DLC, so I probably wouldn't have bought that item.

I think developers often do a bad job at pricing their DLC... though they know the sales data, maybe it works. I don't see much of it as a good value. I'll pay $10 for 3 maps, because I know I'll get hours of enjoyment out of those maps. But a lot of DLC doesn't really let you get more play time out of a game, and the effort to create the content doesn't always justify the cost.

I would probably pay a couple of bucks for retro NJ Devils jerseys though, because I'm a sucker like that.

Tell me about it. I bought cops & robbers over a month ago and have yet to play it online. Every server I find is just a bunch of jackasses ramming into each other like retarded monkeys. I have never found a game of BP online where people actually worked together or did any challenges.

Because they know people like you will buy it. End story. That or they didn't have time initially to put it in - when you're under the gun to meet deadlines, stuff has to be cut out/put on the backburner. Why rush to get it out when you can charge people for it later? If someone wants it they'll buy it. Don't complain about DLC that you bought...you made the conscious decision to buy it.

Batman: AA is supposedly getting more free challenge map DLC next week. That is good DLC.

Horse armor and $10 map packs are bad DLC.

Yeah it's this type of thing I'm talking about. If you're going to offer DLC, make it free, or make it major game changing DLC. Releasing armor for your horse or an extra map seems like a rip off, stuff like that should be free. Extra characters (like Yoda in SC IV) I can see paying a couple extra bucks for.

In SC IV, there are 3 equipment DLC's that I can remember, of which contain in total a mere 15 pieces of armor. So for $6 you get 15 pieces of equipment, which has only a minor affect on the game. I guess the SC IV equipment just left a bad taste in my mouth. In the normal game there are 476 pieces of equipment. For a $35 game that equals 13.6 pieces of equipment per dollar spent, and on top of that the regular game has something like 25 characters and a bunch of stages. For $2 I should be getting at least 30 pieces of equipment average, not a lousy 5 pieces.

It just seems like a big ripoff.

Well now I know not to buy DLC ever again. I'm glad I only stuck with a small purchase of $2. The downside is that a developer might have some really cool DLC in the future that I won't buy simply because I got a bad impression from the Soul Calibur DLC. As I said, it's a weak rant.

I've never understood why people say that things that other people put effort into creating should be free. It's great when it is free, but who are we to tell someone they should give their work away for free?

If the customer has already bought the game, then adding a little bit of extra content shores up the fanbase and makes people more loyal. Nickle and diming the fanbase just makes people resent the developers. Take me for example, after feeling the utter disappointment from this DLC I will not buy DLC ever again. I will buy the base game and that's it.

yea, and i guess all the web developers out there, once they finish a website for a client, should do any upgrades and support for them for free.

they do it because morons will pay for it, just as you did, and they make $$ off of it.

/shrug it's not something I will purchase again. I guess I'm spoiled from all of the fan made extra downloads for PC games that have been released over the years.

Analogy fail. Web developers =/= console developers, and it's not even close.

both of them are working for free.

Yay, another DLC thread!

Why stop there? Why not condemn the entire industry and stop playing games altogether because of one bad gaming-related experience?

It's silly to give up entirely on this form of content delivery simply because of one bad purchasing decision. There are no absolutes. As with all things there are both good and bad forms of DLC. It's unfortunate that your first experience was with the latter.

I'm new to the whole PSN and PS3 crowd, I guess that's the only reason that this surprised me. I'm used to either buying console games where everything is included at launch, or buying a PC game that has mods / add-ons that are free. The only exception I can think of is Half Life 2, where I paid a little extra for the Orange Box which came with the 2 expansion packs. The HL2 expansions were excellent bang for your buck. That's my idea of how I expected DLC to be.

So I'm a noobie to the whole PSN experience and approached it from a PC perspective, where small expansion material is typically included in patches for free. Take for example Warcraft 3. Blizzard has released many maps for free, automatically included in their patches. They opened up map making to the masses, who have come up with great maps like DOTA (which I still play to this day).

I can name a ton of other PC games that I have bought where the developer created a patch which has a couple of extra things they add in there. The money they gain is from the fanbase; a good game with free DLC for minor things adds more loyal followers, who in turn spread good comments about the game via word of mouth which encourages more people to buy it which makes the developers more money.

To me it just seems like a cheap tactic. Now that I have been scammed once by the developers I won't be scammed again.

The comment about condemning the entire industry is a bit ridiculous though, but I haven't grown fully accustomed to this sub-forum so I guess people blowing my comments way out of proportion should have been expected.

It was a half-jest illustrating my point about how giving up on DLC entirely is equally ridiculous.

I understand where you are coming from and certainly it's hard to see any value in something like horse armor or avatar clothing but there's a fair amount of worthwhile content like the GTAIV Episodes, some of the Fallout 3 add-ons, etc. that are certainly worth checking out.

DLC is just an extension of the concept of expansion packs (which are common on PC games; pretty much expected on any strategy game). DLC is just usually at a smaller scale than an expansion pack - but also a smaller price. Sometimes it's worth the money, often it's not (usually not in my opinion). Don't let one bad experience ruin DLC for you entirely; there's some good DLC that's a good value, you just need to know what you're buying before you buy it.
