DIY versus retail who is it really for

Most of us are DIYers to the end but, the majority of the computer buying public will go to the dells, gateways, and HP/compaqs without fail. the question remains the same what defines a person as a DIY or a retail buyer of a DEll/hp/gateway etc. what are you opinions

DIY'ers put their own comp together, and put what they want on it. Dell/compaqs...they put the computer together, and they usually put crap on computer that users usually uninstall anyway.

I had a choice of either buying a dell or building my own obviously I decided the latter only because I get to pick and choose what I wanted in my system.

lately tho I tend to notice if I had to rma a bad part some manufactures tend to be ass holes about it. While a friend of mine who had a problem with his comp just sent it back to bestbuy and because they could not fixed it replace the item with know sweat.

Which manufacturer?

Most that I have dealt with have been fine. OCZ didn't even ask quesitons, they just asked for my email address so they could send the RMA form 🙂.

Asus was a pain in the ass the first time I had to rma my board. things have change a little tho the second time around.

I think that you meant what mentally goes on for a person to decide to build instead of buying oem, correct? In that case, it's just a personality trait.

the mechanically inclined, electronically inquisitive, or just the kid in us that wants to see arcs-n-sparks... thats the DIYers...

Dell/Gateway ppl are middle classed suburbia who would rather rot their brains to MTV2 or drive their shiny new SUV than worry about technology and such. My pesimistic .02

I have both, purchased 2 Dell XPS machines over the years, maybe 1 IBM Aptiva too 🙂 also custom built 11 Machines over the years (Not all for Me). Currently have a Dell Dimension XPS Gen2 P-IV 3.0Ghz and a Custom Built P-IV 2.8Ghz box in a home LAN. I tend to favour custom built machines however sometimes it's more convienient/practical to buy a pre-built.

My 2 Cents 🙂

I like to build my own, but I'll tell my friends/relatives to buy from Dell....instead of me building them one, because then if something breaks its Dell's problem not mine =).

I like to build my own because I know whats in it, and I always put quality parts in my computers, its pot luck with a prebuilt one sometimes.

yep

That's what happens when you poorly word a topic. sorry people

The "dude your getting a Dell crowd" tends to use statements like these

hey it cost more money for you to build a system versus me going on line or going to a retail chain(best buy, circuit city, and the rest)
I don't have the time to deal with puting a system together
tech support sucks
DIY are for geeks

I bought a Dell in 2000, and I'm building this time around, and the jury is still out. The main difference is the motherboard and graphics card - Dell really overcharges for a decent graphics card, and I'm not so sure their systems other than an XPS can handle them anyway as far as power and cooling.

There's certainly more risk and cost in doing it yourself. But what swung me was the ability to do a clean install without crapware and the avoidance of excess proprietariness, and the promise of blinding speed. So far it has not went well, with the 24 vs 20 pin power supply taking me by surprise. Should be running soon, so we'll see.

The argument goes like this If you buy a case,Mb with cpu,HD,graphic card, and OS you will pay xxxxx dollars versus me buying a bundle package with a printer and video camera to boot.
that is just one example of how the conversation goes.

But they are charging you for the cost of putting it together, and often times the stuff they bundle with it is junk and stuff you don't need. In the case of printers, they will bundle low end ones, so you will end up spending more money, because the cost for extra ink cartriges will be higher.

This is what I do.

Lets put this in a social point of view from a High school / college point of view ^_^

DIYERS = The nerds, usually the overlooked and smarter people, electronically exsquisite.
NOT DIYERS = W00T LETS GO OUT AND PARTY AND GET DRUNK, DUDE CHECK OUT MY NEW KICKASS TRUCK WOOT

Sorry if I offended anyone, but sadly this is certainly true.

But we are all nerds here arnt we? 🙂

I like DIY because often when going the store-bought route your upgrade path is very limited and they skimp on components that most consumers don't consider when buying a PC. As far as the price argument goes, you could say that the person who buys a pre-assembled PC will end up paying more in the long run because they will end up buying a whole new system instead of just upgrading the nessecary parts. It's also much more satisfying to show off the new rig you built than the latest Dell. It's the same reason some people are satisfied driving a stock automobile and others want to make thier rides unique. Customization and optimized performance.

I like to know exactly what's in my system. Any time I buy a computer uprade, I research it before I put it into my system. That is why I build my own computer as opposed to buying a pre-built. The OEM's like Dell & HP will use the cheapest parts possible to build your computer. It can mean that you have some nice OEM parts such as Lite-Ons or it can mean you can have really generic crap. I've had 3 Dells now that were absolutely sh!tty at reading original CD's and some burned DVD's. And those optical drives were DVD burners. The RAM that's usually put in is also very high latency stuff that's worse than the average valueram from Corsair or similar.

What an articulate and cunning statement. You managed to stereotype the simple minded masses in cliche manner. :cookie:

thankyou 😉

Even though the last part of your statement I did not understand I guess it also makes me part of the simple minded masses 😕
