DIY Speaker Sites?

NE1 know of some good build your own speaker sites? I've found a few, am looking to build home theater speakers. Have the tools to build the cabinets, but would like pre-built crossovers & some comprehensive plans.

There is also hometheaterforum.com where there is a lot of info. I have started looking into building my own subwoofer and am awaiting repsonses.

Paldo, do you know anything about building a subwoofer? I have seen www.partsexpress.com where you can supposedly build an awesome subwoofer for under $200. I have seen a nice subwoofer and amp, but know nothing about other needed parts.

Got any info?

I drop into the DIY video projector discussion occasionally to see if there's been any success with high res lcd's or better light sources. I might build one then.

Speakerbuilder.net, great site! 😀

Forgot to add, I'm building the DHT CC (dual woofer horizontal version, not posted yet, but I have the crossover+layout plans) for my own HT, all I need to do is build the XO, and finish the cabinet. From my experience with the Dayton 5.25inch woofer, it's a STEAL @ $13.50.
I can't wait to finish it. Should have no trouble smoking a $150 Paradigm CC150 or a PSB 8C.

Other good sites:

Madisound
Zalytron

Check my sub using Parts Express parts in my sig.
15inch Dayton DVC - $132
275watt RMS @ 4ohm plate amplifier - $135
Total cost was about $300 (still haven't put on the mahagony veneer, so it's not much of a looker...yet).

Best part? Raping Velodyne, Cerwin Vega, Def Tech subs that cost 3x as much.
115db @ 20hz, in a ~2500cf (~320sq. ft) room is sweet 🙂

What would my recommendation be for $200?

Get a good driver, like the 15inch DVC, and make an infinite baffle sub.
This is one like you'd have in an attic; one side plays into the listening area, and the other vents into the attic (or basement, same difference). The benefit of this setup is you get a TON of subsonic bass, your whole house shakes instead of just the HT room, you dont need as much amp power, EXCELLENT transient response (IE: very tight, clean, no-overhang bass), and of course, no box so the GF/Wife doesn't complain 😀

$80 for the 120watt plate amp
$132 for for the 15inch Dayton DVC (600watts RMS, 32mm linear stroke, 5 year warranty)

I have quite a few other recommendations(driver and amps and box sizes), just LMK whether your willing to go with the Infinite Baffle sub or you really want a boxed sub.

Viperoni,

I would take your suggestions and order today! I am not sure about the infinite baffle setup, because I just spent $40,000 in home renovations which included making a knee wall behind the big screen (aka nowhere to vent the infinite baffle up) and made my kids bedrooms downstairs. Don't think they would like that.

I assume the infinite baffle is what they offer on partsexpress that claims mounts in the wall.

I am now leaning towards keeping my current speakers, getting a new receiver with 5.1 and adding a sub. I am not looking to shake the house. Moreso, approx 1ft cu box with nice bass. The 120w plate would be good. Would like to keep it under $200 in parts.

Can you PM me or post a parts list of everything, including XO's and such that I would need to piss my wife off?

Much appreciated.

Mahogany is such a nice wood. Black walnut would be my choice. Built of couple of jewelry boxes out of the real stuff
