Yes, that is why they have "backlighting". Light passes through the LCD glass. The LCD crystal changes colour to represent what you see on screen.
I think it was tomsharware.com that got this whole DIY projector thing going. They did this a while back.

toms didn't get it going, he just made it popular it was going with those projection panels that were for powerpoint for awhile, then people were just figurring out you could take apart a normal panel when tom came up with this

I know the whole concept of this is nothing new. Back during the APPLE 2c days, I can remember companies marketing similar monochrome LCD panels that you would lay on a overhead projector. I think 3M used to sell one, but I cannot remember the names of any others. If anyone knows what I am talking about please elaborate and post some pictures.

those panels actually got pretty advanced and they were the way to go for power point presentations and such before small LCD projectors got afordable, the panels got up to xga res and full color although there contrast ratio wasn't the greatest and responce time was a bit low.

Any LCD panel will work as long as it will fit on your overhead projector.
