Hi,

I really need someone's help. I ran cat5e to 3 rooms in my house from my office. I am using Lagrand Cat5e ports in all three rooms which I've wired as the B wiring option and I've terminated the cat5e cables in my office with the same B wiring option and presumably I wired the ends correctly as when I plugged an ethernet cable into the jacks downstairs and used my cat5e tester and all the wiring came up as ok/green. I then plugged all the ends into my Netgear GS605 switch and then plugged an ethernet cable that came with my Netgear N600 Cable Modem/Router from the router into the switch.

The desktop computer is plugged directly into the router and works fine but my TV plugged into the jack is having problems connecting to the internet and when it does it's super slow and then drops. Same with a blurry player in the other room. I want to put another switch downstairs that is plugged into the downstairs jack.

What have I done wrong with the wiring. It's driving me insane. Please help.
 
What troubleshooting have you tried?

1. Plug PC into switch and see if you can get a stable Internet connection
2. Plug TV into router by moving the patch cable from the switch to the router and see if the problem goes away .
3. Swap out patch cords between PC and TV
4. Double check IP addressing scheme (I assume your router is serving DHCP, but it would not hurt to check).
5. Check for IP address conflicts between devices.

I assume your wiring runs are within Cat5 spec (100m)?

All jacks work just fine when I plug them into the router directly but not when the router is connected to the switch and the jacks directly into the switch. I don't have enough ports on the router
 
Are you sure the switch is OK? If the cables work directly, then they should also work through the switch.
 
I looked at the specs for the switch and it is a pretty basic switch that includes auto port switching for cross-over connections. Should be plug and play!

You may want to check the duplex settings (if possible) on the TV and switch. If one device is autoconfiguring for half and the switch is setup for full, you could run into some strange behavior. This would also apply to the connection between the switch and the router.

Does the PC also have issues when connected through the switch? Have you tried swapping out the patch cord between the switch and the router?

Frankly I'd just swap out the switch. It doesn't sound like it is working correctly if plugging stuff directly in to the router everything is fine.

Its either a bad switch or else when EVERYTHING is plugged in, something is causing a conflict with something else, leading to the problem. Switches are so cheap, I'd just get a new one and start from there.

How long are your runs? Are you running parallel to electrical cable? Can you take a picture of the terminations?
