To get a jumpstart at doom9, ignore Flask or xmpeg. Jump right into either FairUse, or Nandub. Nandub last I knew was the best.

Pesonally, I like these two other sites more than doom9. Like madthumbs said, stay away from Flask. I use the DVD2AVI, Vfapi, VirtualDub method outlined in Nicky Pages doing a 2 pass encode with DivX 4. I believe the 2 pass encode with DivX 4 is similar to Nandub which was the only way to do a 2 pass encode with DivX 3. I've never used FairUse, so I can't comment on that.

you guys don't like XMpeg ?? I just started using it and for me, It did a better job than Flask or DVD2AVI and I was able to setup both passes and just let it run. Are there others that I can do that with?

I use primarily FairUSe also. Flask Mpeg must have problems with win XP or something, because it always crashes when trying to open up VOB files. ONly one set of DVDs worked with flask and xp for me. the only problems i have with fairuse is the considerable amount of time it takes (10-12 hours for my 1.1ghx tbird) and that fairuse can only rip certain resolutions, rather than letting you set your own.

Nandub is good when the resolution must be lowered significantly to acheive a decent bit density such as when squeezing a longer than average movie onto one disc. However, DivX 4 is superior at higher resolutions. So, if if the space is available due to an average time (roughly 90m) or using more than one disc then use it instead and maintain as close to the original resolution as possible. I recommend Gordian Knot for either. Fair Use is okay for a novice but it is not as efficient as Nandub. Doom9 has complete guides for all.

SniperWulf, Nandub will let you setup both passes before you encoded like Xmpeg. For one cd rips stick to Nandub/divx3.11. Two cd rips look good with either codec.
