DivX to DVD aspect ratio question

I have a 16:9 video (DivX) that I want to put onto a dvd, and I know how, but the problem is, on a 4:3 tv, it's still running in widescreen (no letterbox) so everything is extremely squished. I'd like it so that on a widescreen TV, the movie plays in it's original resolution, but on a 4:3 tv, it plays in the letterbox format.

How would you recommend doing that?

You need to make it Anamorphic.

edit - btw, its not 16:9, movies are typically 2.35:1...thats why even if you have a widescreen TV or monitor, there are still little black bars.

A lot of movies are also 1.85, and have real skinny black bars because 16:9 is approximately 1.78.

True....and some are even 2.76:1, althought its rare. If I remember correctly...Bun Hur is the most famous movie in this format.

lol

Seriously though, what programs could I use to put the divx file onto a dvd, in anamorphic aspect, and have it compatible with most dvd players?

If needs to be encoded as anamorphic as far as I know. Sorry, my database has been tapped out on this subject.
