DivX or SVCD?

Ok, I want to rip my DVD collection into one of the formats. I have a DVD player that plays SVCDs and my PC has a TV-out to watch DivX. I've ripped DVDs to DivX, but haven't really tried SVCDs. I've downloaded DVD2SVCD, which is an all in one prog that seems to be decent. Just wondering which format you'd choose.

For fun mostly. I wanted to try out that new DivX 5.0 codec, if I were going to go with DivX. Or try out making SVCDs for the first time.

I haven't really seen too many SVCD's (plenty of VCDs, though). Are they worth getting into?

SVCDs are the way to go... about as close to the DVD as your going to get.

Are you Stevie Wonder in disguise? :p

I've never seen a Divx that can touch the quality of a good SVCD. On the other hand, a good Divx rip will also take up a lot less space than a good SVCD. A good example on size is that pirate DVD rip of LoTR that's going around...the SVCD rip takes up 4(full) 800MB CDs, while a Divx rip would take 1 or 2 (depending on the quality).

Here's a short way to describe it (Assuming all are sourced from a DVD movie, and the ripper knows what he's doing):
SVCD > Divx > VCD

While I agree that VCD's on the bottom of the list. Wouldn't the DivX and SVCD depend on the bitrate being used? What if that same 4 disc LOTR rip was on 4 discs? How would the quality compare, then?

Download, err I mean try to see if you can look at an SVCD movie that was a dvd-rip, telesyncs don't count. The quality will speak for itself.

Also you say you can watch Divx on your computer with tv-out. But what if you wanted to take a movie to watch at a friends house who doesn't have tv-out. It would be kind of awkward to have a group of people watching a movie in front of a computer monitor wouldn't you agree?

To be totally honest, I don't know. But IMHO, having a Divx file that big defeats the purpose of using Divx in the first place. The best way to sum it up is if space is a concern, use VBR Divx. If you just want the absolute best quality, and you have tons of space, a high bitrate SVCD is the way to go. (We're talking ~800MB vs. 2+GB)

If they're from the same source, a 2 disc SVCD would be better than just about any Divx. Like Prodigy said, try to find a SVCD of a DVD-rip and it really speaks for itself.

So, how many discs should I aim to fit a DVD to SVCD rip onto? Is 2 alright?

Um.......................if you already own these dvd's, why overly compress them, lose the video quality and the surround sound?!? Are you actually going to watch a DivX version if you have the original there?

<----completely baffled

SVCD for the fact that it can play in set top DVD players. from a distance away, it's kinda hard to tell the diff between divx and svcd so go with the one that's more easily playable.

I love my LEGAL copies (DVDRip) SVCDs ;) ;) ;)

They're excellent quality and I'll never download (err, I mean RIP from DVD) a DivX unless if it isn't in SVCD format again :)
