Divx Movie & Subtitle Problem

How do I exactly get a movie and subtitles to work?

I have the movie files (CD1 and CD2), and the subtitle files CD1.sub and CD2.sub in a subtitle folder. I play the movie with Windows Media 9 and turn on subtitles but nothing is on the bottom of the screen but a black strip.

There are also CD1.idx and CD2.idx but I don't know what to do with them either. Any help? Thanks.
