xine works for me. I've heard good things about mplayer too.

mplayer and vlc are ones I tried to get working temporarily. Lost interrest when I said .DLL on my screen..

Need to get the codec from somewhere.

Ive used both aviplay and mplayer successfully. You must get the windows dll's for the divx codec (just search on google) and put them in the proper directory for divx to work...
