divx encoding on ddr vs. normal sdram

Hi

The message title sort of says it all. I heard that it's possible to encode a divx movie in realtime using a 2.0 pentium iv. My question is, if I should use a sis 645 with sdr or the intel 845 sdr motherboards, what kind of performance hit would I take purely as far as divx encoding is concerned?

Thanks for a great forum.

The memory type really shouldn't make a difference in DivX encoding. The CPU and hard drive are really the only things that will affect performance, so you should be fine either way.

It's possible to encode Divx in realtime with a Duron 900, I do it on a regular basis, but I wouldn't want to use SDR on a P4 setup for any reason.

Hi

I have had two replies on here, one says memory doesn't make a difference and one says it does. My question now is an estimate of how much difference ddr or even rambus will make over sdram when a dvd is encoded into divx?

Thanks

I don't think that the memory will make a whole lot of difference by itself. I can't be sure, 'cos my old rig was SDRAM/P3 and the new is DDR/Athlon-XP i.e. too many factors changed to answer that question. It's certainly possible to encode at real time (XP-1800+ @ 1.60GHz, 512Mb DDR, Epox 8KHA+). You'll find speed improvements by using different encoders (i.e. Xmpeg instead of Flask) and newer codecs. Look at Doom9 for loads of useful info etc.

My guess - system RAM won't make a huge difference. Cache will make a difference, but the main benefit is: the higher the clock speed the better.
