It is if it is on a cd-r that your buddy gave to you to pop in.

your buddy is getting a 4-8gb thumbdrive/80gb external drive for his birthday!

pfft just use an OS with WMC and pop that disk in your hard drive. Wireless goodness ftw. Being able to completely manipulate all of the media wirelessly through a really nice and easy interface is the true beauty behind the 360 anyways. We are only limited by what file types MS is permitting which sucks of course. Now, if you are dealing with the PS3 then I am not sure what to say. I am not familiar with their software.

PS3 allows you to easily stream media with tversity. Although directly running it off of the cd is far quicker (if you already have a cd with it on there) than having to put it on your PC and then stream it.

tversity can be used with the 360 too, but it's not perfect. It causes lots of problems for lots of people. It has also worked flawlessly for others. I have tried every known software out there for transcoding and I have never gotten any of them to work to the point where I am satisfied.

I am tired of dealing with some hacked transcoded piece of crap. I just want some simple built in feature that works. I want my 360 to be the wireless media center that it should be. That's all. If the fall update for the 360 doesn't provide me with that then I will probably end up building a PC media center and close the book on the issue.

Any idea if this will include xvid?

Just DiVX for now. DiVX and xVid are different products so different licensing deals would have to be done.

I was under the impression that xvid was covered under GNU GPL.

It is but I thought you still had to license it for commercial use like the PS3 or 360 (probably wrong).

Well, it's commercial support but we, the console owners, are the ones actually using it. The DivX codec has been able to play most* XviD content (and vica versa) for a long while now, since they're both mpeg-4 ASP codecs. I don't see why the implementation on the Xbox or PS3 would be any different.

*Unless some particular flags are used in the encoding process that breaks compatibility.

Divx can decode Xvid files, so perhaps that will allow xvid-encoded avi's to be played as well. And I'm guessing this Divx commitment won't just be limited to the playback of .divx files right?

I don't think anyone knows for sure. It will be a real slap to the face if it is limited to .divx files.

Not supporting the AVI container would, IMO, make the whole effort completely stupid. Most people with the sense to use other better containers (mkv and mp4) also have the sense to use the better h.264 codecs....not to mention that h.264 inside mp4/m4v are already supported. I trust that MS realizes this.
