Divorce law really screwed this guy.

That is messed up. No childless marriage settlement should be that one sided. It basically forces the guy to either a) kill himself b) go to jail c) <option not stated because it is morally wrong>

Before they seized my passport I'd cash out everything I had and settle down in some far away land where they could never get me.

Sell the headstone, use money to run to non-extraditing country somewhere in Latin America, spend rest of life sipping Pina Coladas on a patio in the jungle.

I could really see him become suicidal.

Homicidal / Suicidal. I'm surprised that he's not holding this against her enough to consider that.

Even her 22-hour a week job at an antique market was proving to be a hardship, Cormier testified, acknowledging that she took a quarter to a half an Advil a few times a week to deal with chronic pain.
Wow, the pain must be unbearable.

Fuuuuck. I'd probably kill myself if I was in his position. I'm not reading the entire article - but wtf? He's responsible for her medical costs, alimony, etc., and they have no kids?

They had an agreement, then a law was passed that required him to pay more, and a divorce judge made him liable for that amount retroactively. And now he makes less than the monthly amount he's supposed to pay, yet he's still liable for the full amount. Proper fucked.

Don't marry, problem solved. Live together until you get sick of each other, then separate w/o all the divorce BS.

In a lot of places, most IIRC, you still become common law after a period of time and your "spouse" can still come after you.
