Can some here explain to me how the combat works? I finally downloaded the early access release off steam last night. I only had about 5 minutes to play it but I died in my first encounter. I googled combat mechanics for Divinity OS but got nada.

Anyone here that can give me a rough breakdown on how the combat system works? Or provide a link if you have one please?

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure how new you are to turn based combat, and in particular this game. So sorry if this is too simple for you.

In this game, combat is turn based, meaning each person involved in combat takes a turn and then it moves onto the next person etc. Each person also has action points. This means that a person may have 8 action points, and they use these points doing certain things during their turn. For example, walking to a destination may take 4 action points, leaving them 4 left. Or casting a spell takes 6 action points. Once they used all their action points their turn ends and it moves to the next person.

I'm not too familiar with this game, but other aspects come into play. For example, a persons dexterity (speed) will usually determine the amount of action points they have, as well as who starts combat first (big advantage in turn based combat to start first...)

Thank you for the thorough explanation! I played the game again and got a few battles in before I died again. It seems that this game relies on having a good ranged attacker, and that the fighter class will need to be used with care. You simply cannot go into battle and take charge with 3-4 enemies around you, as you'll get slaughtered that way.

I guess I'm a noob at this kind of battle system, but I do find it interesting as a unique approach in lieu of the same old button mashing hack n slash.

(Just a note, I am a backer and have been following production in their blogs and on the forums, but I have not played the game yet.)

One of the things to remember is that the game is in alpha and balancing is one of the things they are specificly looking at. There is a good posiblility that the game is not properly balanced for a warrior if you are not an expert player.

Second, the game is intended to be hard. Expect to die.
