most working families do not need the space of a suburban or another gigantor SUV... in their most common applications, they're completely unnecessary...

This is elitist bullsh!t. YOU do NOT know this, nor do you have the right to dictate to people what they may need and not need.

If I have a boat, or other hobby that requires a truck or SUV, I'll be damned if I'm going to be forced to have two cars instead of just one. If I have kids who are carpooled or like to bring friends on trips, I again will not have someone dictating to me what I may or may not need, based on their casual observation of me driving it to work or the market alone.

I hear ya brother.

Just the other day, my neighbors who dont have ANY children, went and bought a brand new 4 door car. What a waste, I mean there are only 2 of them, and they each have a 4 door car. To add insult to injury, they each drive a car to work each day, thats 1 person in a 4 door car, it just kills me that they are destroying the environment, and not caring about anything but themselves.

To teach them a lesson, I got in my SUV and ran down all the new trees in their front yard, I hope they get the message.............Selfish bastards.

In the long run, probably. Immediately, I think that gas prices will go up because they'll play on people's fears of turmoil in the mid-east.

Ummm... A Suburban IS a truck. A truck that doesn't *completely* waste the whole back half of the vehicle for most people. Pickup trucks simply aren't that useful as daily drivers for most people. An SUV like the Suburban is a terrific in-between. It has a lockable, dry cargo area, carries 8 safely, and you can still fit plywood sheets or a couch in the back :) It's terrific for long car trips, even with just 4 people. Letting each kid have a whole seat to him/herself is a godsend especially when they're tired and whiney :) I know personally -- my sister and I hardly fought at all when we took those 5-hour holiday trips to Dallas in our Suburban :p

And FYI Suburbans have been "Texas Cadillacs" for a LONG time....at least since I was a kid. They have been status symbols in Texas (esp. more rural parts) for quite some time. This is no new trend.

Always easy to spot people who are jealous cause they cant affor done.
For one, ALL SUV's are built on "truck" chassis's. For two, technically, they are pick-ups. Trucks are BIG, like earth moving kinda stuff.

Ah, young'ns

Screw SUVs, screw horsepower, all I care about is a car that can handle with some torque. I want to be able to take those turns at speeds that would roll those behemoth suvs and slide out those 10bajillion horsepower go straight only cars.
I don't need to haul whole live cows to market in some suv, the speed limit is 65 so I don't need 10 zillion horsepower either.
The roads are twisty and it takes torque to speed out of those turns. The thrill isn't the size or the max speed, it's how well it does in the turns!!!!!!!!!!

What are these people thinking? How can so many people be so ignorant as to be so susceptible to fashion?

I was thinking about this lately. When you go to look at new cars, what do you think:
A) I want a suburban
B) I need a suburban

I bet everyone her says A.

Truth is:
A) I want a suburban
B) I need a saturn

People forget that cars are LUXURY ITEMS. You need one these days, but no one needs a suburban. Fine by me though. I'll buy the cheap car and put the saved money into an auto manufacturers stock. Then I will encourage people to buy big, expensive cars. Every car someone purchases just contributes more money to my dividend distribution :)

Then again, anyone willing to pay $35,000 for one of these will not be hurt by inflated gasoline prices.

Hey kherman, Remember how we talked about risk vs. cost. I would argue these poeple driving a 8000lb F-350 are safer in general in auto accidents which lowers thier health risk at a higher financial cost to them. Think of it as a insuance policy for their family.:)

Like your v6 Accord w/ 200+ hp is really all that god damn necessary. I mean after all, you really need to be a speed racer w/ fast acceleration in a FAMILY SEDAN. Why dont you go complain about sports sedans or convertibles or motorcycles.

Geez, biggest group of whiners out of all types are SUV haters. Get on w/ your life. I'm sure there are more important things that you can whine about in your life.

What are you talking about motorcycles?? Mine can get close to 40mpg, outrun just about any street car, and carry myself and one other person. motorcycles are the answer to traffic jams, and gas milage woes, etc....

I'm not sure if there is much benefit of a F-350 dually over a F-150. They both have frames (real ones) that make them safe. In a F-350/F-150, the F-350 obviously wins since it is heaier and higher off the ground. But against a car, the F-350 has only minimal benefits improvment over an F-150. mostly due tothe extra weight.

I agree with you though. It's just a fine line is all.

Suck it. I drive a minivan. :D

Screw your SUVs. I have more unused people-hauling capacity than you all combined.

So why aren't you up in arms against that? :D

Hmm, i dunno where in Houston you're at but where i'm residing and travel along i see more cars and cutesy SUV's than the behemoth SUV's you mention.

Bullsh!t. Many of the SUV's out there are built on car chasis so that people can impede my view like a real SUV, but lack the actually grunt that make SUV's useful. I have no problem with anyone buying an SUV if they are actually going to use it, but I think it's rediculous to buy one to drive little Timmy to soccer practice. But hey, it's your choice, although I plan on never buying anything larger than a station wagon.

It isn't fashion, it is armor. With so many other SUVs and trucks driving around, it just isn't safe to be in a small car anymore.

I sure don't want to put my kids in a little car surrounded by a million big heavy trucks. No matter how well designed that small 2,000lb car is, it will not survive a 6,000lb truck smashing into it.

People who can afford $40,000 SUVs do not care if gas hits $2.50 a gallon.

Honestly, I think gas could be $4.00 a gallon and most would still pay it.

So you want people two own multiple vehicles? Are you going to buy me a car too? :)

I can afford one vehicle, I cannot afford two. So my only vehicle is a Suburban. :)

I think they do lynch black people at College Station though.

George W. Bush drives his white Suburban around his own ranch, as well as into town... He loves that thing. :)

All I'm saying is, unless you know these people intimately, you cannot know if they really need the vehicle or not... nor is it up to you to determine that.

When you see the woman driving a large SUV alone, how the fsck do you know why she's alone? Ever occur to you that she may have just dropped the kids off someplace, or is on her way back to get them?

In fact, A parent will be alone in their family vehicle a majority of the time. Does this mean they have to buy a smaller vehicle because it offends you to see them driving it alone?

Thanks for pointing out the obvious... :D

Some people are just a little too high and mighty for their own britches... ;)
