Congrats :D

It does seem to be very Seti orientated here, i do feel sorry for those who do other projects and are trying to make themselves heard.

I have some ideas to help with that, but unfortunately I'm in the middle of moving out to CA. In a few weeks I'll bring those suggestions up. Right now I'm just cruising some of the projects before I shut down.

I realize that ECCp-109 needs the production I've taken away, too. In my own deluded way, I'm trying to help my teammates there help themselves. It hasn't been easy keeping my trap shut, but I think it's for the best. I am, after all, just a lowly stats man.

<< Dasm, too many folding projects going on, which one is this, MereMortal? >>

Distributed Folding

TA stats

I went from 11th to 2nd in two days, that is a bad sign.

Well, I am about to finish my first WU. So we will see how many "blocks" it contains. I don't know jack about this folding thing but we will see what happens.

We made 20th!

But there is no chance to advance further w/o help.

Not only that, but when I have to stop next week we will lose multiple places in the rankings within a day's time. :(

Hrm. I think I may be able to shift some power this way. Watching the graphics draw in is at least mildly entertaining... :)

Yes, Terminal, my apologies.

The day I posted that nobody but icemax and myself seemed to be moving. Then icemax left for another team, and others on the team started to go up. That was my only goal.

Strange. I can't seem to see the page through my firewall, but the page wants to see me:

<< The firewall has blocked Internet access to your computer (ICMP Unreachable) from www.distributedfolding.org (206.248.62.6).

Well, it looks like the DF team lost its #2 person, who left for another team. So be it.

But on that note, let me just say this. I am THROUGH trying to promote DC teams. I've had it. Screw it!

And the new ideas I had to help promote teams, well screw those too!

Don't take it too personally.. as I was saying to Smokeball earlier, each of us has talents and gifts, and yes patience to deal with different aspects of the TeAm's needs. Maybe take a break from promoting and try tech-support, helping solve problems and get other's problems fixed.

Maybe help out the stats guys or just sit back and crunch units. Your contribution to the effort IS appreciated whether you see it typed or not. :)

Is anyone else having problems connecting to the server to upload work? Either getting no response or invalid handle name error message?

Yes, there are problems.

There is a patch on the download page that is supposed to help with this. I found that I could connect to download a WU, but had no success uploading them. Since the week I decided to help with this project is almost up, I've decided to move on. Hope they get the problem fixed.

Obviously my short post earlier did not do justice to the point I was trying to make. I am not angry (maybe a bit disappointed) that someone has left the team. That happens all the time. Nor was this some "I don't feel loved/appreciated, cheer me up" post. It is about me being angry with myself for wasting my time.

Over the past six months, I have seen a trend with the TeAm that I didn't particularly like. The different projects have started to take on a more isolationist attitude. I thought it was about time for someone to not only be concerned about the welfare of the TeAm as a whole, but to do something about it. So I started trying. But it seems that a majority of the people are only concerned with the projects that they work on. Pity.

Not that it is wrong to concentrate in a specific area. But if that is how the TeAm is going to operate, it will lose/never gain some good people who see the project they want to get inolved in portrayed as a we-do-that-project-just-to-say-we-do-it kind of project. Personally, I think I may soon find myself in this postion (except for the 'good people' part). After seeing the response to smaller projects' recruiting efforts, why would somebody want to waste the effort? When ECCp-109 is over, I will have to seriously consider if I
want to remain here---if it won't be a an endless cycle of wasted effort.

These feelings have been growing steadily over the past months, so I gave some thought as to how to improve the situation. I decided that the only way to feel better about the situation was to transcend individual projects and get an overall picture. So I made up a table of the rankings of all the projects in which the TeAm is involved. And I checked how we compared to other DC teams (I even made up a web page for everyone to see). As expected, in certain projects we compare well. In others, we fare mediocre at best. It seemed obvious to me that some of the smaller projects really needed some help.

So I came up with the following two ideas that I thought might help.

1) Find other members of the TeAm who would be willing to forgo any assocation with a particular project and who would be willing to work on any and all projects. Come up with a cool name. Determine a course of action to help the TeAm overall. For instance, help all projects to get ranked above 25th in the world.

2) Make a gauntlet race. Get people to enter a high profile race in which particpants must complete a certain amount of work in each project in which TA is involved.

Frankly, I don't know why I ever bothered typing all of this, especially in a thread that 99.9% of the people won't read. Perhaps I want/expect too much. Wouldn't be the first time. So now that I haved bored anyone who bothered to read this, I will step down to my proper station, leave my grandiose plans behind and let the TeAm be what it will. After many months of frustration, I've learned that I can't do anything to change it.

MereMortal you bring up some good points. I imagine that one's overall satisfaction with any team and project is how closely aligned are the personal goals for the team/project with the overall team direction and 'tone'.

I confess I didn't see your previous page you mentioned, outlining the verious teams and their placements, I'd be interested in reading if you still have it available, thanks.

That's a great page, MM. I wonder if we can get that information hosted on the teamanandtech.com webpage, possibly with a java applet that refreshes with your data every so often.. That would help bring a small level of TeAm cohesion.

I understand your grief -- a mix of nostalgia and idealism. We're a bigger team now than we were two years ago. Also, many of our members aren't active on the forums but grind away loyaly for the project they signed on. Even still, the SETI membership drives brought in many remote assimilations. It's our core membership that visits the forums weekly that we depend on for the health of the "TeEm" -- those who weigh their commitment to the team higher than their personal stats in any one project. We saw this with the powerpot auction and the race with DSLR where people converted for the duration.

We're a strong team and we have the ability to start new projects and gain quickly. I guess I don't have an answer for your concerns except to say that every team experiences to some degree that sort of isolationistic feeling in certain projects. We can't be #1 in everything (atleast not yet), but we are established as a top runner. Maybe once we have some Flexinstaller that will simplify rotating projects, we will move closer to your vision of the team... but right now we aren't doing too bad.

Thanks for all you do, MM. :)

I like the chart, nice to see the projects in a 'at-a-glance' tyep of format :) As for the nubmers they seem more encouraging than not, AT is one of the more balanced teams.
