Distributed Computing???

Well, I decided that I spend too much time in OT.

And since I know the basics about DC, but not too much about it, I figured this would be a good time to learn about it. So I'm ready for you to bombard me with information about Distributed Computing.
Like I said, I've been too bored lately, and maybe you'll turn me into a hacker eventually 😛

I'd appreciate it if you started with the basics - what is DC, especially RC5?

<< small PM >>

That's the biggest lie (and PM) that I have ever heard 😉

PS: You're supposed to tell me this stuff in the thread so that I'll learn and stay out of OT 😉

well here is my short on rc5.

Rc5-64 is the RSA labs 64 bit encryption scheme. They wanted (I think) to prove that even 64 bit encryption was not secure enough. So they started this contest 3 years ago. The contest was to decrypt a message coded in 64 bit encryption. The method Dnet chosen a was brute force. So her we are 3 years later and only a little passed the 1/3 mark.

I am sure someone could do better then i can, but it is a start.

I'm completely stupid when it comes to computers.

What does 64 bit encryption mean?

Thank you for noticing our 500K blocks, Adul 😉

I remember when she made fun of me for checking the stats before we went to bed. Now she's started checking them too 😛

Damn! That gorilla icon is intimidating. 😱

Anyway, distributed computing is splitting a chore between computers like using 100 kids with their shovels and pails to remove the Snack Bars from a sand box instead of using a giant feline.

because not everyone can read Dennis' PM (maybe theres a lurker out there...) i can go for the quick once over...

RC5 - project by distributed.net, it set out to prove the infeasibility of 64 bit encryption in the age of large datacenters, but at 3 years later and a third of the way through the keyspace (all the possible keys to the encrypted data, 2^64) its more proven the feasibility of said encryption. i expect the keyspace to be exhausted within another 14 or 15 months given accelerating computer speed. also, the expected value of finding the key is just a couple months off (the halfway point). the RC5 dnet client also includes other projects such as OGR, which i'll get to now. athlons and durons are excellent for this project.

OGR - is a project to find optimal spacings for frequencies and other wave form phenomenon, AFAIK. IMHO it has more scientific merit than many other projects out there. currently 24 node (?) OGR is almost finished up, and 25 is becoming more common in dnet's packets. perhaps someone more familiar with this project will speak up. K6s are better for this project than any other.

Seti@Home - this is probably the most common DC project, with more than 2 million registered users. S@H analyses radio signals piggybacked from the arecibo radio telescope in puerto rico. it looks for coherent radio signals from extra-terrestrial origins by scanning around a scientifically significant frequency. the project has both command line and GUI/screensaver clients for ease of use, as well as many helper applications developed to monitor progress and cache workunits. pentium 3s rule the roost on this one, though athlon/durons are coming on strong.

Ah.... good. Galactus is feeling better. The sense of "humour" returns eh?

I'm trembling with fever but I can still be silly with the best of them. Just don't ask me to think straight. 😛

toolgirl: Most of what DC is and what the different projects are about has been said, welcome to us 😎

No we won't 🙂

We will however:
 1. Make you a stats fanatic
 2. Make you want to network your home
 3. Teach you how to overclock your computer
 4. Get you to want to apply number 3.
 5. Make you a network semi master
 6. Get you ranting and raving that your computer won't overclock more
 7. Get you to tweak your computer so much it's more like a fine tuned race car than a computer
 8. Get you to want to learn linux
 9. Make you even more of a nef than you already are
 10. Get you to thank Kilowatt on your knees for klinux
 11. Require you to spread the word
 12. Make you wish you had more friends with fast computers
 13. Make you go into rehab from stats overdose
 14. Wish you welcome with open arms

Welcome to the TeAm toolgirl 😉

With love and respect your fellow TA member

LOL
He's not as intimidating as some of you guys 😉

Toolgirl,
Welcome! 😀

<He's not as intimidating as some of you guys>

No, there's a big difference between intimidating and just downright scary! :Q

LOL - toolgirl, I know exactly what you mean. Dennis' PM about RC5 are information packed
🙂

I figured that Napalm and I still say that there's a difference between intimidating and just downright scary. 🙂 For example of what I mean, a 350lb all muscle pro lineman is very intimidating, but Hannibal Lecter is downright scary. 😉😉😉

<< NEENER NEENER NEENER!!! >>

NAPALM!!!!!! :Q:Q:Q:Q:Q

watch your dasm language.... there's a Lady present. Sheesh 😉
