Distributed Computing vs. Grid Computing

Hello All Fellow Humans!

Can anyone tell me the difference between Distributed and Grid computing in their actual physical function. The way it has been explained to me, is that basically one is done by private citizens, and the other is done in a business environment. Can anyone tell me if there are any architectual differences?

Thanks!@!

Nice to have you drop in Rilescat. 🙂

From just the casual reading I have done I believe the term ?grid? is being used for the same concept as Distributing Computing but with a more selective membership. Corporations and Educational Institutions are the two groups that recently met in Toronto to discuss the parameters and details of this proposed ?distributed computing? project.

So I would say that ?grid computing? is a sub-category to the more general category of ?distributed computing?.

I would like to invite you to join our AnandTech Distributed Computing Team. We have many projects and I'm sure one of them would strike your fancy. 🙂

Thanks for the invite! I do have a semi-decent amount of processor power in my boxes at home. I used to be a big Seti guy, but let myself lapse recently.

More on grids:

I have been reading more about grids, and it seems to be a hot topic for corporate research and things. Similiar to ditributed computing, with the exception that the corps. are using internally available computers to run their processes.

Do you suppose that we (small home users) will be able to make a little extra $ by ponying up resources for grid computing? I would think corps would be much more receptive to the idea given they are controlling everything.

Seems like a better system from the corps perspective then distrbuted computing, given security concerns, dependencies, etc...

Just thinking with my fingers....

check out capcal if your interested in making some loose pennies and since capcal doesn't require any CPU usage, just pure bandwidth. run somthing like seti, folding, gnome, or UD on the side 😀
