Distributed Computing Selection

I feel like such a tool asking so many questions, sorry. I am trying to decide what distributed computing group I should load on my computers. I would be very greatful for some feed back. I have participated in Seti@home a very long time ago, but I am hearing about problems with loading and unloading wu. Anyone maybe have a list of the different programs out? Thank you for any information posted.

The problems with Seti seem to have vanished now, so you may want to reconsider that.

ConfusedBW - I currently have three computers, well two with constant internet. I am starting to build a a few other computers and since I am not home all that much I because of work. I wanted to get my computers working on something at least the time I am gone. What is going on with all this race stuff I am seeing. I don't really understand what is going on. Thanks for the reply so quickly.

As we have several team Q's up and running now, I trust that getting WU's will not a problem and If you join the team under your old ID then you & TeamAnandtech will get credit for the WU's.

But welcome to whichever project you choose to crunch for TA!

The race things you see are things that we do within TeAm Anandtech, as some fun, and to increase our production.

If you check out "My Seti Page" in my signature, you will see information on how to set up Seti the best

If you use one of the many public queues, then you are almost 100% guaranteed a constant supply of WUs

For that one that is not connected to the internet, then ECCp-109 will probably be the best, as it does not require an active internet connection


But, in the end, the choice is yours.

On the race deal, we have a couple of big one's going now. OhioDude organizes and keeps stats with daily updates on a bunch of races to various milestones (500, 5000, etc). We also periodically split off into "mini teams" for short duration (a month or so) races with 6 or so teams and 5-10 people per team. This is all friendly (but trash-talking is encouraged )intra-team racing.

We also have a slightly more competitive race going against DSLReports, ends this month. We are trashing them, but could always use more help. All these are Seti races. The races just keep up interest, with a little competition, in the project.

Wow, This so far has been the most helpful response I have received yet. I posted in some other forms about FTP software/hardware (any sites or ideas for this would be very helpful too) information I needed and didn't get a much of a response. I think I am going to do Seti@home. Know any good sites that review computer set-ups and reviews on how well certain systems work for crunching wu's. One of the computers is going to run linux/ maybe BeOS. The other will run Windows 2000. Thanks for all the help I will be crunching for TA in the days to come.

I find that the best thing to do if you want to know anything non-DC related it to do an "OT: My topic here" thread, you'll get a better response than anywhere else!

As to which systems run well at Seti, just create a thread and ask away!!

For a reference, my Athlon 1.0 @ 1.43 (110*13) on Abit KT7 and WindowsXP got about 5:30 a WU. Gonna see how an ECS K7S5A improves the times

I think I will opening a thread about that very shortly. I feel like such an idiot becuase I usually know what I am doing. At least in making other things work. This stuff I am starting to get into is just confusing the hell out of me. Never ran an FTP server before or done any serious number curnching. Just a bunch of networking and database building. Now Customer Service Oh well, Time Warner is a fun place to work at times. Especially since I am in line for RoadRunner I hope I hope.

From what I have read, and from my own experience, the AMD XP line of CPU's, along with a DDR memory enabled MB will get you crack'n with the best of them. My slightly OC'd XP1700+ on a EPox MB is averaging about 3:20/WU.

No need to feel like an idiot -- you're in good company.

I've done network tech support on campus, so I know what you are saying.. It was funny the first 20 times someone plugged in a telephone cable into the ethernet jack or spilled beer on the surge protector or keyboard.. then it just became sad.


As for what you're asking. The WU problem is easily addressed by using a caching program like SetiDriver or SetiCache pointed toward one of our team queues (look for the thread at the top of the forum). Also, like others have pointed out, we have three types of races.

1) Individual teammates racing each other. Look for the thread "Seti Race Stats and Milestones for 2/23" by OhioDude. You can participate in this race at anytime by finding someone with similar WUs who agrees to race you. Just PM Ohiodude and he'll add you to the race.

2) Mini-teams comprised of (5-10?) TeAm members race for glory and honor. Look for the thread "S@H Race To The Shamrock MTR 24/02/02 Stats - Day 13" by ConfusedBW. You have to signup to participate in these miniteam races when they start. This one should end 3/17 I believe.

3) Our TeAm vs. another team close in standing. We are finishing up a race with our esteemed rivals DSRL at the end of the month. Currently we are ahead by ~70k+ WUs.

Races help boost our WU total and pass the time. It's all for the good of the project and for the TeAm (Team Anandtech).

I have actually started my account. And I got my account name too!! Only one computer running (not at optimal proformance) S@H for TeAm. It needs a lot of work to start pushing WU's effeciently. I play to just add all the computers I got to the program. And all the computers I am building, since I am not home all that much. Thanks, again to everyone. Glad to be a part of the community finally.
