Distributed Computing Rendering

I thought I'd stick my head in D/C to ask this question.

As any 3D artist knows, rendering time is the idle time during work where you grab a cigg and a cup of coffee and sit idle, while your computer sucks up all available resources. Basically, people would get a lot more work done if it weren't for rendering time.

Now I realize that most studios and serious CG artists have their own render farms set up to alleviate the tedious process. But that got me thinking, would it be possible to distribute rendering among all the volunteers such as SETI and all that jazz. Background render processes usually suck up all CPU power, but thats no different from SET is it? If developed, I think if there was a large base of users, renders could be sent off, and everybody chips in, and the render is sent back in a flash.

So time to ask the professionals on D/C....Thoughts?

Well, technically that is surely possible, but why would I donate all my CPU cycles and money for electricity and time to something like distributed rendering of CG stuff? What is the benfit for mankind of that? What are the results of that? THat I can see my name in the next pixar CG movie? I guess that almost nobody would participate in a project like that, as it sounds very commercial and there doesn't seem to be any gain for mankind in it. From a technical point of view though, possible, no doubt.

Well obviously the user base would consist of fellow CG artists, who are willing to give up unused cycles. The point of something like this would be to benefit your fellow artist, not society really. But good news is that it's possible.

Now someone needs to write the program haha!
