I'd be surprised if they ever actually charged anyone with that.

They do in spurts, but not consistently, seeing as how you rarely hear people bitch about it on internet forums


As part of a crackdown on distracted drivers, the California Highway Patrol is not just looking for people illegally talking or texting on their cellphones.

Officials also will be on the lookout for those who are eating while driving. And if you're reading magazines or applying makeup, they'll also be looking for you....


...Although there is no law saying someone can't eat while driving, a distracted driver is in violation of the law.

Under California’s vehicle code, a driver can be ticketed $145 to $1,000 for having “wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property.” Officers will also be tracking these distractions and the number of distracted drivers, because there are not very good data on just how many distracted drivers there are.

I've had soccer mom types in Mercedes SUV's etc floor it and make left turns when the left turn signal isn't green across from me yacking on a phone several times that could have caused a major accident.

They are just out in la la land.

I've been tempted to floor it and ram em a few times myself, as I have a green light and they don't.

Not worth the effort.

In defensive driving we were told to wait a couple seconds after the light changed to give time for the red light runners to pass through. Then we have to add a second for each exasperating circumstance. The first circumstance was that the hot babe crossing to the right, the second was that my mom was being a on the phone, and the third was that I had to squeeze my super-piggy-gulp back into the undersized cupholder. 2+1+1+1 = 5. Five seconds was the appropriate margin of safety. If you don't like it, talk to my defensive driving instructor. The two second rule saves lives. It may have saved your's today and all you can think to do is honk and moan, jerk.

OP lives in San Diego. That "margin of safety" time is already calculated and implemented for each traffic light so that you don't have to wait another 5 more seconds after the light turns green.

Yea, we've had like 4-6 deaths just since Sunday on I-95, the first one shut down the northbound lane's then the second one happened when rubberneckers slowed down and a girl driving a semi-rig plowed into a line of stopped cars killing 4 right there. The FHP has a very low presence on I-95 near my area, they prefer spend time in wooded areas of the median where they can bag people for speeding. The downside is with less visible FHP presence people just drive like it's nutt-so land, passing at 85-90 in the right hand land, tailgating anyone who has the balls to "only" drive 70 in the middle lane, it's slowly De-volving to a "Road warrior" scenario, 3-4 incidents involving gun-play in the last year alone. I believe most states dont even have any kind of cell phone law. You can pretty much do whatever you want and have full freedom to be a moron on the road. In my experience, both genders use this freedom fully

Believe me, I did a lifetime worth of lane-splitting this morning. Traffic was fucked because of an overturned big rig on the 15 freeway at the 56 in San Diego. Nothing like 18 miles of solid gridlock to start your day. :biggrin:

So many people are killed and injured because of this cell phone thing. But as always it comes down to money. The telecom industry is politically powerful...

This is a huge problem, there are enough people who have a hard time driving to begin with. When I see someone driving terribly, it's usually one of a few things. Asian and distracted drivers seem to be by far the worst.

CA Courts recently ruled that using your phone for GPS/Map is not against the cell-phone laws.

Stay tuned for a new law next year, but for now, watch out for those who do not have nav.
